Rubery Juniors 2 Wythall Juniors 1
Rubery entertained last years runners-up Wythall Juniors in their first home game of the season. Due to Cup matches taking preference at Bay Tree Farm the game was played at Boleyn Rd. Rubery began with the same starting line as the season opener at Phoenix Rangers.
Rubery had the better of the early exchanges but had little to show for their efforts. Wythall took the lead from a direct free kick, Calvin Graham firing home from just outside the box. Rubery lost Duncan Wigley with a pulled hamstring moments later Matt Hancock replacing him. Matt was soon in the thick of the action and twice got to the bye-line and delivered telling crosses into the box. Rubery were now well on top and had Wythall defending far too deeply for their own liking. Reece Hales equalised when he got on the end of good cross to head home with the Wythall keeper just unable to thwart the effort. H-T 1-1
With the game there for the taking is was just a matter of belief for the Rubery boys. The pressure was starting to tell on Wythall and yet again Rubery had them pegged back deep in their own half. Mikey Smith had a chance from the left but flashed at his shot and his effort went well wide. A couple of TJ corners caused trouble with Josh McGinley going close with one header that was cleared off the line but Rubery were not to be out done. Reece Hales again pounced on a defensive slip and his goal bound effort was deflected into the goal by the Wythall defender to give Rubery a well deserved lead. Lewis Johnson cut inside two defenders and unleashed a good effort that the keeper did very well to hold on to. Rubery threw on Connor, Sean and Oliver to provide the fresh legs in the middle of the park and defensively Rubery were solid enough to protect their one goal cushion and pick up their first league victory of the season.
