What a performance today against Berkley so close to that all important first win, all the parents are so proud of the lads for that display today, keep it up, it will come. Spuds Dad
Just a short note to commend your team.
Your players, manager and parents were a credit to your club, all were friendly,
and enthusiastic which in turn made the Sunday afternoon at our ground an
enjoyable one. If all teams followed your example what a great future youth
football has.
Thank you : Garry Cottrell, Maypole FC, Youth Development Officer

Mar 07 Rubery Juniors 1 Maypole United 0
Rubery Juniors welcomed Maypole to Baytree hoping to finish with a win in the final game of season and reverse the score line from the previous encounter between the teams. The match kicked off and both teams were up for the game as the tackles went in, with neither team giving an inch. Slowly Rubery started to dominate the possession through neat passing and good work in the midfield. Rubery Juniors continued to apply pressure to Maypole United’s goal area, but to their credit Maypole defended fantastically getting their boot in the way every time it seemed that Rubery were going to score. Rubery were now encamped in Maypole’s area but as with many of the games this season, Rubery were playing some great football but just couldn’t get the ball into our opponents net. The referee blew for half time with the score at 0 -0. Paul and Mark then gave there customary team talk to the lads and the 2nd half began just as the 1st half had ended with Rubery dominating the possession. The lads were getting in some excellent attacking positions, but the score stayed the same as Maypole goalkeeper made some fine saves. With just a few minutes left, Ellis got the ball from Maypole’s left back and went down the line where he crossed the ball into the box and Matt J smashed the ball into the back of the net!
Goal! 1 – 0. Maypole kicked off and try as they did they couldn’t get past Rubery’s defensive pair. Shortly after this the referee blew the final whistle for the end of the game and Rubery finished the season on a high. Well done to Maypole United and good luck in the future! Man of the Match: Matt J, Well Done Matthew. A big Thank You, from the Manager’s Paul and Mark to the parents who watch all the matches come rain, sleet, snow and sun, and especially to the players who have given their all throughout the season! Well Done Lads!
25 Feb 07 Rubery Juniors 2 Berkeley Juniors 3
Rubery Juniors welcomed Berkeley Juniors to Baytree for the penultimate game of the season, hoping for a favourable result that could push Rubery further away from the relegation places. Although the result showed only one goal difference between the teams the score line didn’t reveal how well Berkeley played.
Rubery kicked off and from the onset Berkeley never gave the lads any time on the ball, as they kept getting their tackles in and started to boss the midfield. Eventually their pressure paid off when they got the ball in Rubery’s half and after a few neat passes they scored past our goalkeeper. Throughout the first half Berkeley made Liam Doyle, Rubery’s goalkeeper make some brilliant saves which kept Rubery in the game. Rubery were trying as hard as they could but Berkeley Juniors were passing the ball around the pitch really well! Just before the referee blew his whistle for the end of the first half, Rubery lost the ball in the midfield and Berkeley got it to their striker who coolly slotted past our goalkeeper 2 – 0 to Berkeley. Paul changed it around at the interval and put some fresh legs on, hoping for Rubery to come out strong in the second half, but to no avail as Berkeley kept the pressure on and scored their 3rd goal within 5 minutes of the restart. For the next few minutes Berkeley continued to pepper our goal, with Liam once again making some superb saves. Eventually Rubery broke out of defence with a good passing move which resulted in a corner. From the resulting corner, the ball was flighted over into Berkeley’s goal area and Rory powered the ball into the back of the net. 3-1! Could Rubery get something out of the game with about 13 minutes left? Rubery were now playing with confidence and passing the ball around the midfield, with one decisive pass from Deacon, Rory ran onto the ball and cracked a superb shot past Berkeley goalkeeper. With the score now 3 -2, it produced a tense final finish, but Rubery couldn’t break down Berkeley and the game finished! Well done to Berkeley Juniors, and good look for the rest of the season! Well done to Rubery for all your effort! Man of the Match, was a close call between Rory Budge and Liam Doyle, but because of his numerous fine saves throughout the match, Liam gets it! Well Done Liam Doyle
18 Feb 07 Hunt End Rangers 0 Rubery Juniors 0
Rubery Juniors went to Hunt End Rangers’ ground hoping for a much-improved display from the previous week, against a team that were riding high in league. The match kicked off and for the first couple of minutes Rubery struggled to get the ball off Hunt End who were looking menacing in attack and from some neat moves made our goalkeeper produce a few good saves. Slowly, Rubery started to gain control in the midfield, through some great tackling and with Deacon making some incisive passes. The lads were now growing in confidence, and with the ball now encamped in our opponents half they began to make Hunt End’s goalkeeper make some last ditch saves, both Rory and Ellis had good shots saved. As with many of the games this season, Rubery just could not get the ball over their opponent’s line. The Referee blew his whistle and the team talk began with Paul and Mark giving the lads loads of encouragement. As with the 1st half Hunt End came out really fast and looked dangerous in attack with Matt C making some timely defensive tackles. The pressure eventually eased through the hard work of all the players, closing down and applying pressure to their opponents. Rubery, were once again on top and the majority of play was in Hunt End’s half, but the final ball just would not go for the lads. Paul made substitutions hoping to get that all important goal, but to no avail. The game eventually finished with Rubery gaining a valuable point. Well done lads for the effort today you were all brilliant! Man of the Match was shared by Deacon Boyce and Matthew Culwick. Well Done Deacon and Matt!
Well played to Hunt End Rangers, good luck for the remainder of the season!
04 Feb 07 Rubery Juniors 1 Wychall Wanderers 3
Once again Rubery Juniors welcomed Wychall Wanderers to Baytree hoping to reverse the score line from their previous encounter, but from the start of the match Rubery Juniors just did not seem up for the game. Although Wychall were playing some neat football, Rubery were helping Wychall look impressive by not making tackles or putting any pressure on their opponents. As Wychall were constantly pressuring Rubery’s defence they scored two goals in quick succession and you sensed that our players’ heads had gone down. Eventually the referee blew for half-time. Paul and Mark then tried to gee the lads up for the 2nd half.
The 2nd half started just like the first half had, Wychall having the majority of play in Rubery’s half, with them always looking dangerous on the attack. Fortunately for Rubery Liam Doyle was in magnificent form, producing save after save. Wychall continued to press forward and scored again to make it 0-3, with only a few minutes left on the clock Rubery got a corner and from the resulting cross Rory slammed the ball into the back of Wychall net 1-3. Shortly after the kick-off the referee blew for full-time and Rubery trudged off. Unfortunately the lads did not have the best of games, but keep smiling lads! Man of the Match was Liam Doyle. Well Done Liam!
Well played Wychall Wanderers, and good luck for the remainder of the season!
28/01/07 Rubery Juniors 1 Knowle 2
Well this was a game that we could have done with winning if they wanted to improve on the two wins in three record. The game started well with both teams going for the win this fixture always seems to pull out all the stops. both teams were pushing all the time with some good movement all around the pitch and every player was giving there all some really good saves from both keepers and two great stops by the Knowle keeper to keep Rory from scoring twice. The whistle finally goes half time 0.0 this is more like it. It's without doubt the best performance Rubery has ever gave against Knowle over two seasons and we was looking for that first win.
Second half got under way and before we knew where we were Rubery had gone in front by a goal set up by Rory and put in by Deacon. Could this be that moment to give Rubery more faith in there ability has a team. not to be, no sooner had Knowle kicked off Rubery still celebrating Knowle seized the moment and equalized well what a blow within a few minutes the score line had gone from 0.0 to 1.0 to 1.1 ok on we go once again both teams were throwing every thing at each other with shots at each end and some good saves as well. the final whistle was about 3 minutes away when Knowle finally put to rest any hope of a point when a well worked goal made it 2.1 to Knowle. Rubery still pushed but it wasn't to be final whistle went and final score 2.1. that was two good sides today that played really good footy and from managers to parents and all that are involved should be proud of the effort both teams put in well done to you all and good look in the games to come.

7/01/07 Studley Juniors 0 Rubery Juniors 1
Congratulations to Rubery Juniors, the team won their first game of the season with a hard fought win against Studley Juniors. The team arrived at Studley Juniors ground, not sure if the game was going to go ahead due to the rain over the last few days. Fortunately the pitch was ok to play on and made for an exciting encounter between the both teams. Rubery kicked off with Luke making his debut on the right wing, Liam taking over the goalkeeping duties from Elliot and Matt C reverting back to sweeper. Straight away Rubery went on the attack, continually applying pressure to Studley’s defence, Ellis then made a good run and had a shot deflected for a corner. With the lads in the box Paul the Manager told Matt C to come forward and stay just outside the box just in case the ball came out for him to have a shot. Well, the ball did come out to Matt C who hit the ball instantly and the ball flew into the top right side of the goal giving the goalkeeper no chance. What a fantastic GOAL! Now could we go on and score more goals or stop Studley from equalising? Albi and Kyle came on and continued the hard work that all the team were doing, stopping their opponents from making any dangerous runs into the box. For the rest of the half the lads played some great football, with Rory having a shot that just whistled past the post. Rubery Juniors were dominating the possession, shots on goal, but they just couldn’t score another goal that would have given them the score line that they deserved! Eventually the first half ended and Paul gave the lads a half-time team talk, telling them that they could win this game if they showed the same commitment as they did in the first half.
Studley Juniors kicked off for the second half and once again the lads ran around tirelessly in the now muddy conditions, always getting stuck in, making vital tackles as Studley Juniors tried to get the equaliser. When Studley did get past the defence, Liam the goalkeeper for the day pulled off some great saves. With a few minutes left, Ellis and Luke came on again, and helped the lads defend as Studley got corner after corner, but with resolute defending Studley Juniors just couldn’t score. The Referee finally blew his whistle and all the team, Manager and parents shouted with delight, we had won our first match of the season. Well done lads! Man of the Match was Matt C. Well Done Matt!
Finally, we would like to say thank you to Studley Juniors team and their parents for a pleasant encounter and good luck for the rest of the season.
17 Dec 06 Knowle Village 4 Rubery Juniors 1
Rubery Juniors travelled to Knowle Village football ground hoping for some pre-Christmas cheer, by putting on an a good show and hopefully winning their first match of the season, unfortunately that wasn’t to happen as Knowle Village played extremely well against Rubery Juniors. After only 1½ minutes on the clock, Knowle got a corner and from the resulting cross the ball fizzed through the box, a Knowle Village player stuck out his foot and the ball went straight into the back of the net. 1-0 down, to their credit the lads battled hard and created a few chances, though the opponent’s goalkeeper didn’t have to make a save. The game continued with Knowle enjoying the majority of possession and after some neat passes through the midfield they got another corner. Rubery players got into their defensive positions and awaited the cross from the corner. Once again the ball was fizzed in and unfortunately a 2nd goal was scored which was a carbon copy of the 1st goal. 2-0 down and the Referee blew for half time, the lads came over to Mark and Paul for the traditional team talk and refreshments.
The second half began with Matt C, Kyle and Liam coming on as substitutes and once again Rubery Juniors tried as hard as they could to get a goal back, but fortune wasn’t with them as Knowle Village once again got a corner. From the resulting cross the ball came off a Rubery player’s head and into our goal, with Elliot having no chance of stopping the ball from going over the line, 3-0. The lads to their credit carried on trying to attack to get the initial breakthrough, but the defence became isolated and a Knowle player ran through and scored another goal. 4-0 down, what was going to happen next, well Rubery kept going and had a few more chances before the ball got put in Knowle’s box and the ball came off a defenders arm and a penalty was given. Up stepped Deacon who coolly slotted the ball into the back off the net to make the score 4-1! The Referee finally blew for full time shortly after the goal and although Rubery Juniors were beaten 4-1, the match was an entertaining affair, with Rubery Juniors giving their all! Well done lads! Man of the Match: Deacon Boyce! Well done Deacon!

Away once again in the cup but this time at Studley where
we were looking for our first win of the season. Well it started off poor on our
part the lads really didn't get out of bed, and 15 mins into the first half we
found our selves 2.0 down which came as a bit of a bolt, but not to be out done
and avoid a show down with the manager the lads pulled it back to 2.2 by half
time. Second half started and Rubery found that they can score goals and
throughout the half hit the cross bar, post a few times and had one cleared off
the line. Full time 2.2 Extra time here we come into the second period last min
and bang studley hit us with a sucker punch whistle blows 3.2 to Studley and we
are out of another cup. Oh well it will give us some friendly time anyway but
well done to all my boys for never giving up and showing true Rubery spirit. and
a massive Rubery well done to Studley and we wish them all the best in the next
round
Open Cup round 1:

Alvechurch 4 Rubery 2
This cup game at Alvechurch was intense from the first
whistle as end to end stuff as both teams were hungry for this one. There wasn't
much to call between the two sides the score didn't give us the credit we
deserved, but Alvechurch were deserved winners on the day. We kept pushing but
once again like the week before we left our selves open in all areas but I still
stand by the fact the lads were fantastic and the way they battled against a
team in the division above them. Not even me as the manager could ask for more
off them, so well done lads once again and a massive Rubery well done to the
church and we hope they progress in the cup some more. I would also like to
thank them for there warm welcome and kind support of our boys on the day thank
you all.
Rubery Juniors 0 Hampton Sports 2
Rubery were very unlucky in this one as throughout the first half we were
encamped in the Hampton half but just couldn't put the ball in the net. The
lads were very up for this first game of the season and a massive improvement on
the start of last season. Second half a few subs and the game evened up a little
bit but we were still going full throttle. Hampton came to give us a game no two
ways about it but with all the pushing Rubery were doing it only takes a few
counter attacks to sink the ship and that was the way it happened as we were
caught pushing up and the game finished 2.0 to te visitors. Rubery boys done
really well but once again came off the worst on the day so well done to Hampton
for the win and good luck for the season from all at Rubery

Callowbrook Swifts (A) 0 Rubery Juniors 9
Sadly here we are the last tournament of the season, today as Adam was on a fact finding mission Paul (who knows where the ground is) Lomas shouldered the pressure of running the team alone.
Opponents today were a mixed group, some familiar, some unknown and some deadly. Opening game put us up against Halas Hawks, three power blasters from Ben, but alas not one found the net, at this point Paul was tugging on the lucky wig it was not to be, one chance and they took it Hawk 1 RJ 0, just would not go in the net (Like Paul when asked to buy a round, not to be)
Up next Wychall Wanders, a rather dull and uneventful game (bit like Paul’s suit at the presentation) with both team cancelling one another out, 0 – 0 the final result.
Now this one came alive,Dosthill Colts, two wonderful strikes from Italian signing Rory, one a half volley the other he picked his spot and put it away, the third and last was from old war horse Deacon, penalty given up stepped the lad two steps and it was in, what a pro final score 3-0 (at this point Paul was receiving treatment for heat stroke off his good lady Cath or was it because he had to spend some money)
The final game to get into the ¼ finals and who’s the opposition you guessed it Callowbrook Swifts (now remember I reported in previous reports “When will we ever beat Callowbrook”) Well today was the day, and who else to do it but Ben, 0 – 0 at half time, but Ben had other ideas, his first a signature 20 yarder blast his second a 15 yarder curler, at last the voodoo was broken. Into the ¼ finals against Holy Name, Holy by name but not by nature, they were too strong for the boys today and sadly we went down 4-0, the lads never stopped fighting right to the final whistle.
And so as the players head off to their South American retreats to recover from a hard season and Paul heads off to Butlins, these young lads carried the banner of Rubery Juniors with pride and dignity, even though I may have not mentioned other players in my reports they all do their job on the pitch. It has been my pleasure to report on these tournaments and see the stars of the future and hopefully they will progress to become Professionals (and sign for the Albion) so it’s adios from me I’m off to spot whales in the Pacific (don’t go swimming Paul) Hope to see you all in the new season. Remember follow that dream
![]()
With Paul not with us this week (something about head polish) up stepped Adam (Torn Groin) Deely to take the helm, using his knowledge from his professional days he juggled the formation to confirm Adam was the man.
Up first was three C’s, a strong team but not strong enough for the little warriors of Rubery, Danger man Rory hitting a ½ volley from outside the box to open the scoring and who else but Ben hitting his trade mark 20 yarder to make it 2-0 , we were off the mark.
Rubery 0 Berkley 1, this will go down in history as 0-0 (the ball has got to cross the line, except in 1966) even with top world class ref Ian Simpson as saying “It never crossed the line” we went down 1-0
Rubery 0 Solihull 1, rather a dull match with Owen the cat at his best, at one point Rubery were distracted due to reports of that some celebrity (no not me)some Bluenose keeper was on the line which allowed Solihull to sneak a goal past the cat.
Rubery 0 Glebe 2, this will be remembered as the Owen & Spud game,
Sheffield reserve keeper Owen rose like a salmon to finger tip a shot over the bar with Spud clearing off the line in support on numerous of times, Owen & Spud were at their defensive best today but Glebe were too strong and took their two chances won the game (Ian get Owen up to Sheffield or you will bounce back down)
The ¼ finals were not to be today, the lads did Adam and the Parent PROUD as usual (Paul the team were in safe hands today, Adam give Steve Mclaren a call)
So as I head off to the airport bound for Germany lets hope England favour better and remember follow that dream.
![]()
Sorry folks due to the pressures of Fleet Street, I’ve been stuck in Germany (someone’s got report on England) down to business, the lads were on home turf so expectations were high, the opposition were as follows;
Leafield Yellow, Redditch Town A, Callowbrook Swifts, Norton Lindsey B Finstall Juniors and Rubery Juniors B. First up were Finstall, opening games are always quiet but up pops sweet foot Ben who struck a shot that had the capacity crowd screaming for more, but Paul as always the professional instructed the lads to shut up shop and the win was in the bag. Norton up next, a 0-0 result was fair but it had Paul pulling that last hair out of his head (buy a wig mate)
Rubery B were put into the gladiators arena next, this game was billed a friendly but in the dying embers of the game a ex team member stuck Barcelona bound defender “Spud” behind the ref’s back to the amazement of the capacity crowd The Ref (Graham Poll ) is quoted as saying “what foul” (Get Ian Simpson on the case) The lads held out for a point 0-0.
Callowbrook, will we ever beat them, alas no, we went down 2-0.
Now it is my pleasure, no honour to report on a game that will be talked about in the corridors of F.I.F.A (Paul give Blatter that bung will you)
Leafield 0 Rubery 2, This has memories of Regis and Cunningham (those who remember them) Ben and Alex Lee, Ben latched onto a inch perfect pass from Alex and let go a shot, well words can not explain, Alex was not to out done, Ben returned the compliment after dribbling past 5 players to deliver on a platter the ball to Alex who whipped in a half volley for the match winner.
(we were in the ¼ finals now) last game of the group Redditch, at this point the lads mind were on medals, we went down 3-1. (Young Horsefield Deacon) grabbing that consolation goal (He never stops running that kid)
The sun was setting (or was it Paul’s head) as we took to the ¼ final arena against Leafield, a chess match this one until a lapse in Rubery’s defensive concentration (Spud still suffering from that kicking) Leafield pounced to steal the match. Again the lads did us proud (Paul get an agent for these kids) and bowed out heads held high (always the bridesmaid never the bride) so I’m off on the next flight back to Germany until next time follow that dream

10/06/2006
This week Rubery’s elite were pitted against four teams of unknown qualities, these were: Marston Green A, Kingshurst Sports, Knowle FC (West Germany) and Hampton Sports. Due the fact that Hampton Sports didn’t arrive (Must have got directions off Paul Lomas) all teams had to play one another twice, you roving reporter has broke the results down to simplify the reading (just to show who we beat)
Opening game against Marston was a dull process resulting in a 0-0 draw; the return leg was a different matter with gentle Ben slotting home 3 to receive the golden boot award and rounded off with big Matt C power driving a 40 yard shot to the bottom corner. At this point there was a infestation problem in the gazebo, but luckily Diane (the piped piper) rid the vermin.
Two games against Kingshurst resulted in 1-0 losses (Dodgy ref, friend of Ian’s and the sun was always reflecting off Paul’s Head.
And so to the main event, Knowle, up stepped Adam (Tord loosing his Grip) Deeley taking command of tactical changes (Paul was receiving treatment to sun burn to his head) Adam was ready for the challenge bringing back gentle Ben and bolstering the defence with Real Madrid summer targets Spud and little Matt J (much better than his dad). Holding on to a 1-0 lead into the last 3 minutes, two very dodgy decisions by the ref gave Knowle (West Germany) a 2-1 win, if only we had had the Russian lines man all could have been different. Again the lad can come away holding their heads high, battling to the end, so until next time your roving reporter will keep on chasing that dream.

Juniors arrived at the tournament with a strong squad, drawing their first two games in a battle of the midfields. The next game saw a tactical change by Paul (Luiz Felipe Scolari) Lomas which resulted in an overwhelming win for the Juniors. Keeping with the changes, the Juniors lost their next game to a strong Cadbury team (investigations by FIFA are under way that the ref took a bribe of a Cadbury chocolate card)
The next two were crucial, with “Alex Lee” carrying a slight injury to his metatarsal bone, and the central defender “Spud” still in contract talks with FC Barcelona. Paul made the call for Matt J to be flown from his south American retreat and once again Paul (Sven Eriksson) Lomas had made the tactical change that was needed when Matt J slotted two goals home, one with each foot bringing back memories of a young RONALDINHO. Juniors now had to rely on the opposition to drop points to reach the semi final but alas this was not to be and our Juniors bowed out heads held high in the quarter final.
Many thanks to both Paul and parents for the support and lovely day.
