Saturday 12 May 2007 10.30am at Rowheath
Bournville Pumas U12    4      Rubery FC Girls      4     (Wood N. 4)

This was a 11 a side friendly played over 3 x 20 minute periods. This was the fourth meeting between the Pumas and the Leopards in less than 12 months and another interesting encounter was predicted. From a potential squad of some 15 players earlier in the week it was disappointing to field only 10 on the day, one being young Lindsay and another a guest goalkeeper. Laura Stevenson (Billy) coached the team on the day as part of her ongoing studies.
First period
The Pumas immediately got their good passing going and pinned Rubery back in their own half. The keeper was alert to the through ball and all the girls at the back (Emily, Emma, Meryl, Coral) made decent interceptions but were struggling to produce solid clearances with a slope and a fairly blustery wind against them. The girls were being far too polite in the tackle and it was no big surprise when Bournville took the lead from an accurate finish into the corner after a good through ball. Rubery produced the occasional neat passing sequence with Alice, Jo and Nicki linking up well. Alison tried hard on the left flank to get the ball under control and play short passes back to oncoming supporting players. Lindsay in midfield closed down players and nudged the ball on whenever she could. The girls stepped up the pressure and forced corners and throw-ins in good positions. Coral put in a good corner that just needed a touch at the far post but the chance went begging. At the same time Bournville countered quickly with good quality but were being thwarted by the extra pace of our girls or by a wayward final ball that our keeper skilfully claimed. At the other end the ball eventually fell to Nicky inside the box but her left footed shot pulled just wide of the left hand post. Score at end of first period; Bournville 1 – 0 Rubery
Second period
Billy had urged the girls to show a bit more composure on the ball and to take advantage of the conditions now in their favour. It soon paid off as better first touches and accurate passing from defence and midfield in turn produced more threatening attacks. Bournville were forced into conceding a number of corners. Coral made sure they were difficult for the Pumas to defend and our girls got plenty of bodies into the box. Eventually the pressure told. Alice got in a threatening shot which glanced off Nicki’s chest toward goal and went in off a defender. The dubious goals committee awarded it to Nicky, bad luck on Alice but good news for the defender.
After more good work in midfield from Alice and Jo, Nicki latched onto the ball inside the box and showing neat footwork and balance she stuck the ball away cleanly and firmly in the right hand corner. Despite valiant efforts by the young Pumas more pressure from Rubery followed. Coral put in another corner into the six yard box in front of goal and Nicky volleyed it in cleanly from close range to make it 3-1. At that point it looked like Rubery would go on to win comfortably but the Pumas roared back into life with a powerful run down the right, followed by a measured cross and accurate finish into the far corner. Great play by the Pumas but woeful defending by us. The game was opening up now as both teams found more time and space to bring in more quality to their play. Jo produced good skill on the ball and then found herself in a good position on the 18 yard line but her decent shot was gathered safely by the keeper. Soon afterwards Nicki drilled in a low cross that fell to Alison but she could not get a clean connection on it with her left foot. Alice and Jo were now consistently feeding Nicki with good quality passes and the latter surged past two defenders on the right hand side of the box and fired in a powerful shot that looked a certain goal but somehow hit the crossbar and came down on the goal line and into the goalie’s arms. It was one of those moments that change a game. Might have been 4-2 and game over but soon after it became 3-3. As Rubery committed players forward for a corner they got caught by a quick counter, again down the right, this time a good cross in for a tap in at the far post. Good play again by Bournville but again our girls had reacted too late to the threat and left the backline exposed. That goal encouraged Bournville and it was now end to end stuff. Girls on both sides were visibly tiring from the chasing back they were having to do when their own attacks broke down. The slope and wind gave Rubery the edge and Nicky once again got herself in a good position after good work from Jo and Alice. She shrugged off her markers and struck the ball powerfully into the roof of the net through the goalkeeper’s hands to make it 4-3.
The last action of the half saw a long range speculative shot from Nicki that she hit powerfully enough but it careered off to the right. Score at end of second period; Bournville 3 – 4 Rubery
Third period
Billy now reminded the girls to stay calm and composed in the face of what was bound to be a concerted effort by Bournville to pin our girls back in their own half. Rubery made a tactical switch, bringing Nicki back into midfield and putting Lindsay more forward.
The girls soon found themselves on the back foot as clearances became more wayward and numerous throw-ins or corners were conceded. The girls weathered the early storm. Meryl was strong and steady as usual. Emma used her pace to good effect and got in the first header of the game (a testament to the ground passing football being played on both sides rather than any unwillingness to head it). Emily was persistent in the tackle and then supported the attack. All three girls played good balls out to relieve the pressure. Gradually Rubery got their own game together and enjoyed good possession. Alice got her foot on the ball and played good passes wide to either left or right. As well as that Alice was brave in the tackle and was focused enough to shrug off balls that hit her in the face, despite generous intent by Bournville to kick the ball into touch for a stoppage. Jo took up good positions and made good runs down the right and got crosses in or won corners. Alison carried the ball well down the left flank to force throw-ins in deep positions. She also got closer to Bournville’s defenders to block passes out from the back. Lindsay was seeing more of the ball and got her foot in or got the ball to safety. Emily got forward to get in a lofted shot that skewed wide
The pressure was building and Nicki found herself more and more in the opposition box. Showing strength on the ball she got two strikes on goal that on another day she might have put away but was denied by good reaction saves from the keeper. Late on Lindsay found herself in a shooting position but could not get a clean strike on goal. With time ticking on it looked like Rubery would see out the game for a 4-3 win but just at the end some skilful work by Bournville gave them the equaliser as a ball was pulled back across the face of goal for a tap in at the far post. Another case of being too polite and ball watching for Rubery but you had to applaud the Pumas spirit and skill. It was the last action of the game with no time left for a restart.

Overview
Another good contest between the two sides that made for an entertaining game. Although Bournville might have had the edge in quality it was Rubery who had the cleaner chances to win it. A 4-4 draw was fair overall and a reasonably happy ending for both teams.

The positives for Rubery: (i) good passing sequences that set up chances to score (ii) good character at the end when tired legs were a factor (remembering we played with 10 girls only including Lindsay, and two periods against the elements) (iii) another full 60 minutes play time for Alison that will have benefited her (iv) positive coaching input from Billy that was appreciated by the girls and encouraged them to put together good quality moves.

Thanks to
Gary and all from Bournville for another good game. We will look forward to more enjoyable games in the future.
James Busk for refereeing once again.

Mini tournament

This was a 5 team tournament where each team played each other for 15 minutes ( 7.5 mins each way).
Rubery were hoping to put up a good show, having recovered from illnesses that had dogged them in March.

Dosthills 2- 1 Rubery (Wood N.)
Rubery took an early lead but Dosthills came back well. It was bad luck to concede the second goal in the dying seconds.
Holy Souls 0 -0 Rubery
Rubery had the better of the play but good defending from the Foxes kept them at bay. A sign of progress – first time we had avoided defeat by them.
Sutton 4 -1 Rubery (Wood N.)
A poor first half from Rubery saw them outplayed and 3-0 down. The second half saw a god turnround as Nicki and Jo had chances to score. It was good to lay to rest the ghost of the recent 10-0 drubbing against Sutton when the girls had been ill.
Glebe Farm 5-0 Rubery

Some naïve defending let in champions Glebe who were just too good on the day and finished clinically.

Squad: Morris, Ball, Smith, Wood E., Price, Thomas, Rush, Singleton, Wood N.

Saturday 14 April 2007  2pm at Gorse Farm Park, Marston Green

Marston Green U12         0       Rubery     1       (Wood N)

This was a 10 a side friendly played over 2 x 30 minute periods, but with drinks breaks at 15 minute intervals on what was an unusually hot day.  Rubery suffered from last minute withdrawals and turned up with 7 players. Marston kindly lent us two players to play with 10 girls and our young Lindsay made up our 10. Alice made her debut. This was a re-match, Marston having beaten us 4-1 back in November.

The game started to take on the same pattern as the previous game with Marston putting together good passing sequences. Rubery defended well and hassled Marston into errors. The first half was much of a stalemate and ended 0-0. In the second half Nicki switched positions with Alice and the latter soon got some good passes forward.  Rubery began to enjoy better possession and eventually neat control and a pass from Alice put Nicki through on goal. She shrugged off her marker and fired a powerful low shot inside the far post from the 18 yard line. Marston then stepped up the pace and created a number of chances to score. A combination of poor finishing, good defending and goalkeeping kept the ball out of the net to give a most unlikely final score line of 1-0 to Rubery.

Overview

The result was certainly harsh on Marston but our girls took great credit for a focused hard working performance. Highlights for our girls:

Katie:   first clean sheet on a big pitch over 60 minutes, achieved by safe handling and distribution and good saves.

Emma: brilliant defensive header, adapted well to her unaccustomed role at right back

Meryl: showed good discipline and strength at the back

Coral: good interceptions and usual range of long passes and free kicks and corners

Lindsay: got the ball to safety from dangerous positions

Alice: great debut, neat control and passing and positional awareness

Click: hard working performance, chased everything to keep Marston under pressure

Nicki: another great goal, caused Marston problems throughout

Thanks to: Tony, Janice and all at Marston for a good learning experience for our girls. Particular thanks to the Marston girls who helped us out and played really well for us.

Sutton  10-0 Rubery

The best that can be said about is that the girls can be applauded for making it to the starting line. The squad was again decimated by illness and injury and the 6 who made it were barely in a fit state to play. Pride dictated that we fulfilled our remaining fixture of the season rather than take the easy 5-0 way out. And so the girls braved it out, sometimes at walking pace. It was disappointing that we could not guage our recent good progress against a decent Sutton team who had beaten us 3-0 previously.

Saturday 17 March 2007 at Glebe Farm 2.30pm

Kingshurst 5-0 Rubery

Rubery were struggling with injuries and illnesses, and 3 girls still not recovered from sore throats. It soon turned into one of those days when everything went wrong. With Meryl missing at the heart of the defence Rubery were guilty of some naïve defending. However the three goals conceded in the first half were unfortunate to say the least – the first in off the post, the second a “ Neville / Robinson bobble”  over the keeper’s foot as she tried to clear it and the third was just plain daft. The ball went out by at least a foot for a goalkick for Rubery. All players on both sides stopped. Jo tapped it back onto the field of play towards the goalie. The ref inexplicably shouted play on and a Kingshurst player who happened to be standing nearby, after looking round to see if she had heard it right, somewhat embarrassingly tapped it in. To their great credit our girls just accepted it and got on with it. It was already going to be hard against a good Kingshurst side but that effectively finished it for Rubery.

The second half was more of a game. Nicki got into her stride and caused problems for Kingshurst’s defence despite being the victim of persistent holding. Rubery tried hard to press forward in search of a goal and ran the risk of letting more in, particularly as Kingshurst had stationed a girl on the goal area line next to our keeper. The final score of 5-0 was disappointing but taking into account all the circumstances a creditable outcome.

Saturday 3 March 2007 at Stratford
Stratford Town Girls u14 v Rubery Girls u14

After recent abortive attempts to get a 11 a side game played at Baytree a late decision was made to switch the fixture to Stratford. The 11 a side pitch had not quite recovered from the overnight deluge but there were patches of playable land. With some creative thought and use of flags and cones the two sides agreed to set up two small sided areas across or alongside the pitch to give the girls some much needed play time.
One was set for a 5 a side, long and narrow, the other 6 a side and somewhat wider, so all 11 girls on each side would be fully occupied. The format was 4 separate periods of 15 minutes, 8 games in all, with squad rotation after each period to give girls experience of both types of game and playing in a variety of line ups..Given the unique circumstances and conditions the girls were instructed to just enjoy themselves and try to produce good football. Our original objective had been to test our progress against a better team who had beaten us previously by 6-0 and 4-0.
It was soon apparent from the opening exchanges that both teams had improved in terms of individual skill and team play. Stratford started the brighter but Rubery slowly but surely got to grips with it, their experience of mini soccer coming through as Stratford felt the pace. It was end to end, competitive, entertaining football from both teams who seemed to be enjoying the variety and relatively faster moving nature of the games, all played in excellent spirit. We won, drew and lost games in more or less equal measure, scores depending on team personnel and formations and in particular who had “volunteered” to go in goal. After a while no-one was counting as goals rained in and the girls just played their football. We scored twelve goals in all. We conceded a few more than that but not by much of a margin. Loads of goals despite some good defending which was a tribute to skilful forward play on both sides.

Highlights for our girls:
Alison: did well at the back despite it being her first attempt. Got her toe in and used her pace to get to balls first and to safety. Good dribbling runs down the right wing and good attempts to get in dangerous crosses. Intelligent inter play with team mates.
Click: showed tenacity in the 50-50 tussles in midfield, got her foot in to deny counter attacks, accurate passes or flick ons down the left flank to set up attacks, good throw ins.
Coral: good all round performance – tackling, dribbling, passing. Scored two and might have had more.
Emily: powerful runs down the right flank, persistent battling to win what seemed to be lost causes, clever inter play with forwards, scored three goals, kindly “volunteered” for a spell in goal
Emma: good all round display, powerful strikes, clever passing, broke up attacks, pacy runs forward and back, scored our opening goal to set the scene that followed and did well in goal
Katie: usual good handling and kicking from hand to put Stratford under pressure, good saves, did well outfield also in the 4th period with good positional play
Meryl: solid defending, brought attacks to a halt with persistent harrying and closing down, got feet in to deny strikes on goal from close range, played the ball out with assurance, did well in goal
Nicky: strong and skilful on the ball, good dribbles on both flanks, good inter passing, powerful strikes, scored three goals
Paige: skilful on the ball, held it up well, excellent vision, passing and link play, three good finishes and unlucky not to get more, defended also when she had to
Sam: got stuck in as usual to win important tackles, injured in second period and came back on in the third. One of our brave goalkeeping “volunteers”, rewarded immediately by a powerful shot from close range that hit her in the chest - going by her non-plussed reaction you’d think she had been hit only by a dry sponge.
Zoe: high energy display up and down the pitch, chased and harried, got tackles in, good control and skilful dribbles down the left wing, good passes inside, unlucky not to score, bearing in mind she is relatively inexperienced and only u12 an exceptionally good performance
Lindsay (temporary sub for Sam): good composure on the ball, brave tackling against bigger girls
Team highlights: great team work at times all over the pitch. Closing down, forcing errors, quick counters, playing in triangles, better decision making, always a goal threat.

Overview
A strenuous work out that benefited the girls enormously. The girls enjoyed it, showed a good range of ability, built up confidence and definitely showed the significant progress we came to test. We are not yet to Stratford’s standard but we have closed the gap significantly.
Still not consistent throughout a game and that is a crucial factor to put right in the months and years ahead.

Thanks to
Mike and all from Stratford Town for another enjoyable morning’s football. We will look forward to hosting them soon, whether it be mini soccer or a full size pitch game.
Team: Morris, Ball, Fergusson, Gregory, Thomas, Singleton, Smith C, Steward, Thomas, Wood E, Wood N, Smith L, (sub only when required)

03/02/07 Game One

Rubery 2 -0 Dosthills
Having lost 3-1 and 4-2 in previous games against Dosthills the girls were looking for an improvement on that. The day had not started too well with three last minute absences (Emily, Sam, Click) through injury or illness, Rubery down to the bare bones of a 7 girl squad.
The girls chose the same cautious tactics they had employed with some success against Glebe the previous week, setting out to keep a clean sheet. Emma filled in at right back and Alison left midfield. The girls made a bright start and Nicky scored from her first attempt on goal from wide and deep on the right, her hard low shot to the far post catching the keeper unawares. Dosthill found it difficult to find their usual rhythm. Unlike the previous week our fresher legs were holding them more comfortably. Within a couple of minutes Nicky delighted our fans with a superb turn and powerful strike from 15 yards out to make it 2-0. All we had to do now was keep our defensive shape and discipline. For the rest of the half Dosthills had the better possession but seemed to lack the conviction or quality they had shown the previous week and could not make it count. Our girls defended superbly and Katie handled and kicked well.
Half time: Dosthills 0 -2 Rubery

The girls were now only 15 minutes away from their first league victory. They knew that Dosthills would come back strongly and the first two minutes were critical. And so they did and so they were. Meryl was magnificent at the heart of the defence, resisting her natural urge to tackle and simply blocking the route to goal, booting away the ball when she was shown enough of it. Emma, in unfamiliar territory, was doing the same and playing dangerous balls forward. Coral was playing her trademark long passes up to Nicky to gain much needed respite. Jo, captain for this game, worked tirelessly up and down the pitch to deny Dosthills or force them into errors. Alison, improving all the time now, closed down well and showed composure in getting short passes on to Nicky. Katie who was solid between the sticks was producing good quality kicks out of hand to put Dosthill’s defenders under pressure and finding themselves having to concede throw-ins in dangerous areas. A reminder to them that we were still looking to get a third. Dosthills piled on the pressure in a desperate attempt to get back in the game but were frustrated time and again by Rubery’s determination and sheer refusal to give way. As the clock wore down there were some jittery moments as the girls tired and began to make mistakes but the ball ran kindly for us in the end and it was no more than the girls deserved for a disciplined, hard working performance, punctuated by Nicky’s little bits of magic. The girls came off at the end exhausted, physically and a perhaps little emotionally too as they appeared to make no particular fuss over what they had just incredibly achieved.

Full time: Dosthills 0 -2 Rubery

03/02/07 Game Two

Rubery 1 - 3 Holy Souls Foxes

After a short break of a few minutes our tired girls now faced a fresh Holy Souls who had previously beaten us on numerous occasions. Another severe test. The Foxes started the brighter and threatened with speculative strikes on goal. Ironically that allowed Coral to put in long goal kicks to put the Foxes back in their own half. But they soon came back and a miscued clearance set up a chance for Foxes which they put away clinically with a powerful strike. It looked then as though tiredness would cost us this game. But then Nicky got hold of the ball just inside the halfway line, swept past three defenders and struck one of her right footed curlers off the outside of the boot and in off the near post. A brilliant solo goal that stunned the Foxes and lifted our girls. From then Rubery defended with better discipline. A harmless looking shot then deceived Katie as, unusually for her, she palmed it into her own net when she seemed to have the situation under control. Half time: Holy Souls 2-1 Rubery

The girls still believed they could win or at least draw this game but knew they could n’t afford to concede again. Much of the half saw the two teams cancelling each other out, the main strikers effectively marked out of it. The Foxes won corners and got in shots but they were mostly well wide of the mark. Anything more threatening was dealt competently by Meryl in her quiet authoritive manner. Nicky went closest for us with a long range effort that just failed to hit the right hand post, on this occasion putting a little bit too much swerve on it. Alison continued to grow in confidence as she controlled the ball well before trying to thread balls through to Nicky.
Nicky was being mass marked and so Emma and Jo took good advantage to get space on the right from long passes out from Coral but their first time strikes or passes lacked the power or accuracy they intended. Surprisingly Rubery applied more pressure as the girls got more tired and a second goal looked to be achievable, despite some solid defending from the Foxes.
Then a terrible lapse at the back gave it all away. Just a simple clearance was needed but we failed to get the ball to safety. The Foxes gratefully accepted the gift to make it 3-1. Rubery then enjoyed a good spell of pressure with numerous throw ins and corners but the Foxes were getting their bodies in the way of everything. It was admirable defending. Coral blasted in a couple of hard low corners and had two chances to score from rebounds that she would normally expect to put away but her tired feet failed to get a clean connection. The final whistle came too soon in one respect but the girls were relieved to hear it in another. Disappointing to lose on elementary mistakes after the good work shown against Glebe and Dosthills. A stronger defensive performance from the Foxes gave them a deserved victory.

Final score: Holy Souls 3 – 1 Rubery

Team: Morris, Wood E, Thomas, Smith, Price, Rush, Wood N

Overview
Another good day for Rubery. The girls built on their improvement in the previous week, achieving their first league victory. It came sooner than their manager expected and was achieved with a weakened squad. All the girls are improving but Alison in particular benefited from 60 minutes of continuous intense football. As well as defensive progress we have also put in another two goal performance. Other teams are now starting to take notice of how much the girls have improved. The downside again – not coping well with the second game when it comes immediately after the first. The physical effort put in and emotional effects of securing the first win probably took their toll but the fact remains the girls need to get physically and mentally stronger, which they no doubt will do as they get more experience.

Finally – a special mention for Katie. After 12 months of picking lots of balls out of the back of lots of nets and at the same time keeping our scores respectable she has finally got a clean sheet. Well done Katie!

Saturday 27 January 2007 at Glebe Farm FC
First game
Glebe Farm 1 (0) – 0 (0) Rubery

Having been thrashed 6-0 and 8-0 previously by the runaway champions (who have still not conceded a goal all season) it might have been sensible to expect another heavy defeat. But that was not the game plan for Rubery. With an eight 8 girl squad and so opportunity for substitutions, as well as Nicky returning from a lay off, we set out to defend in depth and hit Glebe on the break. Glebe soon got into their stride but were surprised by Rubery’s tactics and were finding it difficult to put together clean forward passes. They were further surprised by Nicky’s quality as she latched onto a defensive clearance to fire in a first time volley that was only just wide of the right hand post. Meryl in her deep central defensive position followed her orders to the letter to keep the defence sound. Sam at right back was like a terrier and bulldog combined as she won the physical battle as well as the ball. Coral on the left flank got in her share of tackles as well. Emma, Jo, Click and Nicky worked hard and were rotated every 5 minutes or so to keep them fresh with the back three unchanged. Glebe were gradually confined to shooting from bad angles or positions that led to a string of goal kicks. Coral hit long and accurate balls deep into Glebe’s half that Nicky, attended by two or three defenders, brought down skilfully or got on the end of to force corners and throw ins. Some of it was so called “Wimbledon” football but it was very effective. Glebe cottoned on to what we were doing but were failing to deal with it. At the same time Click, Emma and Jo produced excellent movement and support play, running deep and wide to take defenders out of the action to leave Nicky to weave her magic, so we could say a bit of “Italy” to go with it.
Half time came with the girls feeling comfortable and sensing a shock could be on the cards. Half time: Glebe Farm 0-0 Rubery

The second half saw Glebe step up their work rate as well as make a better effort of containing Nicky. That changed the complexion of the game and Rubery now came under intense pressure. The girls showed great belief and weathered the early storm. Glebe’s quality began to come through but they were not finishing with their usual aplomb, perhaps unsettled by Rubery’s tremendous discipline in closing down quickly and generally getting bodies in the way. Glebe almost got through when the ball hit the post only to run along the goal line to the opposite post before being scrambled away. At that moment Rubery sensed this could be their day. More great balls from Coral to Nicky put Glebe on the back foot but their defenders did their job well. A most unfortunate decision then went against Rubery. A ball was struck fiercely into the top of Coral’s arm from no more than two feet away. The whole crowd (much to Glebe’s credit) were astonished by the penalty decision. Katie almost produced a fantastic save as she pushed away a fiercely struck shot to her left only to see it go in off the post. The penalty stirred our girls into action. In the last minute Nicky picked up the ball 20 yards out, shook off and went past two strong defenders and got in a shot that looked to be bound for the far post but a desperate tackle from a quick thinking Glebe player just got a toe on it to send it spinning away off the near post for a corner. So close to pulling off a remarkable result. The Glebe girls and their supporters sportingly gave our girls a big round of applause at the end - that tells the story for Rubery and tells us a lot also about Matt and his u14 girls at Glebe Farm FC. Without doubt our best performance so far and the girls were rightly proud. Although Glebe thought themselves lucky to win it we do have to be honest – they did produce more quality and still might have got a goal at some point if the penalty had not been awarded.
Final score: Glebe Farm 1 – 0 Rubery
Team: Morris, Singleton, Thomas, Smith, Price, Steward, Wood E, Wood N

Saturday 27 January 2007 at Glebe Farm FC
Second game
Dosthills 4 (1) – 2 (1) Rubery

Encouraged by the Glebe game, the girls asked if we could keep the same shape in this game. We did and for 5 minutes or so were having to defend against Dosthills who were playing some neat passing football. With better finishing they might have gone 1-0 up. The girls were looking tired. Against the run of play we went 1-0 up as Nicky latched onto a loose ball and struck a first time shot that was going just wide but was fortuitously deflected into the net by Dosthills keeper. Dosthills responded immediately and Rubery found themselves penned in for much of the half. A speculative shot fooled Katie as the strong wind took it just away from her hands. Nicky gave Dosthills a sharp reminder that she was still a major threat with a run on goal but miscued her shot straight at the keeper. Half time: Dosthills 1- 1 Rubery

The girls were tired but went out after the break thinking they could win it by keeping it tight at the back and thinking Nicky was bound to get through at some point. Unfortunately it was not to be. Tired legs led to lapses in concentration and Dosthills took good advantage to go 2-1 and then 3-1 up, albeit one of the goals a little fortunate via the gathering force of the wind.
Time again to show what the girls were made of. Nicky produced another moment of magic, striking a 25 yard half volleyed curler with the outside of her right foot that started out straight towards the keeper and ended up just inside the right hand post. The girls then put Dosthills under pressure to get the equaliser but as often happens it was the opposition who got the benefit from a neat counter attack to make it 4-2.
Dosthills deserved their victory but the girls realised they had competed on level terms with very tired legs. Final score: Dosthills 4-2 Rubery

Overview
A good day for Rubery. First, the girls have achieved the season’s prime objective – to be able to get onto a pitch knowing they can compete on level terms against good teams and good players. Second, they scored two goals in one day for the first time.
Still a long way to go in terms of technical skills but the girls continue to improve across all fronts.
The downside – we have not coped well with the second game when it comes immediately after the first, although being short on numbers and quality of opposition were big factors.

Saturday 9 December 2006 at Glebe Farm FC
First game
Kingshurst 4 (3) – 0 (0) Rubery

The day started badly for Rubery with traffic problems causing late arrivals, no time for a warm up and fielding only 6 girls in unfamiliar positions. Not surprisingly the girls were caught cold, going 1-0 down within a minute and 2-0 shortly after. It was a case of damage limitation as a good Kingshurst side, who had previously beaten us 7-1 with our full squad, used the extra girl cleverly to put Rubery under sustained pressure. Katie made good saves to keep the score respectable. It was a relief to go in at half time only 3-0 down. Half time: Kingshurst 3-0 Rubery

The second half saw an outstanding performance from the girls who now stepped up their work rate and stuck to simple defensive disciplines. They weathered the early onslaught from Kingshurst and started to look comfortable. Katie came to the rescue occasionally when the opposition broke through. As the game wore on Rubery grew in confidence and put more attacking moves together. Meryl who had moved into midfield had a great run down the left, surprising herself as much as the crowd. Click and Jo got shots in to put a doubt in Kingshurst’s mind and take away their momentum. As Rubery became more adventurous it left gaps to be exploited and inevitably Kingshurst took advantage to make it 4-0.
The girls came off to warm applause from appreciative parents who realised they had just witnessed a magnificent effort.
Final score: Kingshurst 4 – 0 Rubery

Second game
Glebe Farm 8 (3) – 0 (0) Rubery

With just a short break the girls now had to face mission impossible against champions elect Glebe Farm who had previously beaten us 6-0. We now had a full 7 girl team with Emma arriving late. Meryl played midfield in an attempt to cut off the supply to Glebe’s prolific strikers and was generally successful. Emily and Coral got in important tackles and played good passes forward. Emma used her fresh legs to get back quickly to prevent runs on goal. But Glebe had too much quality up front and scored more or less at will against our girls who were feeling the effects of the first game and lack of substitutes. That was despite more good saves from Katie who was desperately unlucky with two parries as Glebe’s quick thinking strikers followed in. Attacking wise, it was difficult for Click and Jo against a team who had not conceded a goal all season and were defending resolutely. Nevertheless they stuck at it. The final whistle came as a relief to a set of exhausted players who had simply been outplayed.
Team: Morris, Ball, Thomas, Smith, Price, Steward, Wood E.
Overview
Despite the heavy defeats the watching parents knew we saw something special here today. The first 5 minutes against Kingshurst were woeful and in the difficult circumstances they found themselves in it would have been easy for the girls to have caved in. The word “character” is over used and often misused. It definitely applied here. We saw courage, determination and pride which at some point in the not too distant future will bring its rewards.

Rubery Girls      4         Bournville Pumas (U12)     2

( Wood E. 2, Smith C., Wood N. )
This was a 11 a side friendly played on the minor pitch over 2 x 25 minute periods ( shortened due to delayed kick off) . Meryl and Sam were missing through illness and Kirsty and Click were unable to play due to other commitments. Rubery fielded three new players (u-12) – Zoe Gregory and twins Georgia and Sian Peal. Bournville had requested the game to get more experience against our older and stronger girls and to try out new players. Previous games in September and October had ended 2-2 and then 6-2 in Rubery’s favour but with so many changes in personnel on both sides the outcome was unpredictable.
First half
The Pumas had the better of the early exchanges, driving Rubery back towards their own goal. Rubery’s makeshift back four of Emily, Coral, Zoe and Laura cleared their lines well. Sian and Georgia in their wide midfield positions got back well to help our full backs and generally unsettled the Pumas. Gradually Nicki and Emma in central midfield started to get to balls first and then played quick passes forward to Alison wide on the left and Jo at centre forward. Jo won a corner on the right which Coral stuck powerfully across the six yard box. Nicki controlled it on her chest and her volley brought a good save from the ‘keeper. Emma was alert to the rebound and finished calmly and firmly to score her first of the season.
Bournville came back strongly but Rubery were now looking more comfortable and were able to outmuscle the Pumas. They occasionally got through into striking range but Katie was again in good form. She pulled off a great save with her feet, just edging the ball wide of the post after a fine sequence of play from Bournville. Nicki was now controlling the play in midfield, switching play quickly from right to left with 30 yard passes out to Alison who was again showing good progress, using her pace to get to balls first and playing simple effective passes to supporting players. Emily and Laura were also getting good passes forward down the flanks. Georgia and Sian diligently held back to secure the defence unless they were encouraged by Coral to get forward. Nicki cleverly put one ball beyond the central defenders, begging Emma to run into the space. Emma produced one of her “turbo drive” bursts of pace to get there first and drove towards goal, lobbing the goalie for a fine second goal. Half time Rubery 2-0 Bournville
Second half
With one eye on next season’s u-14, Rubery made changes at half time, putting Sian and Georgia in the back four with Zoe and Emily. That put four youngsters ( all from the same school) in the back four. Coral and Laura moved into midfield and they both soon got into the attack. Coral soon dribbled her way into the 18 yard box but she was unable to get in a telling cross to the maraudering band of players who had hoped to get on the end of it. The gamble backfired as Bournville countered quickly and soon got the ball and five players on the edge of Rubery’s penalty box. Clever passing and use of the “girl over” produced an opening that was taken well to put Bournville back in the game.
At this point young Lindsay came on for Emma (to the light hearted relief of her dad who apparently before kick off had recklessly promised a hefty reward in the event of a hat trick – she had not scored since May so he thought he was safe).
Rubery responded positively and soon got forward to put Bournville under pressure. Coral latched on to a through ball about 25 yards out, dribbled on to goal and coolly slotted home Rubery’s third. Bournville tried hard to get back in the game but were thwarted time and again by solid defensive work from Emily, Sian, Georgia and Zoe. Not just sound defending but good passing out from the back as well, a very mature performance by the youngsters. On one occasion a sequence of six neat passes saw the ball carried from Zoe as last girl to Alison on the half way line and then to Coral to set up a typical dribbling run and cross.  Rubery were building up a head of steam and creating chances to score. Alison started to see more of the ball on the left and was unlucky with one attempt that was stopped on the goal line. Lindsay fired in a shot but too near to the keeper. Laura was enjoying the freedom of the attacking momentum and got in a rare shot that just could not find a way past the number of bodies that were in the way. It was a spirited effort from the the Pumas who themselves also were getting players forward quickly and were dangerous at all times in possession. They were often frustrated by the offside trap but there was always a serious threat. They were unlucky on a couple of occasions, hitting the post and sending a shot just wide, but as with Bournville’s keeper, great credit to Katie who showed great presence to make life difficult for the oncoming forwards. Eventually Rubery’s extra pace told as Nicky burst into the penalty area with her familiar look of intent and hit a fine shot across the keeper just inside the left hand post. Shortly afterwards Jo produced a great piece of skill on the half way line. A ball was played to her at good pace from the back – she controlled it with her heel through her legs, turning quickly at the same time and accelerated towards goal, leaving defenders in her wake. She drove into the box but was unlucky to pull her shot just wide of the right hand post. That would have capped a fine overall performance in which her link play was excellent. Bournville again came back at Rubery. Another flowing move saw the ball switched from right to left and back again and onto the edge of the box. A fine piece of composure and clinical finish just inside the far post was warmly appreciated by the whole crowd. That was effectively the last action as the final whistle sounded just after the restart.

Overview
Once again it was a fascinating contest between the strength of Rubery and the better quality of Bournville that made for an entertaining game. Missed opportunities at both ends and still plenty of goals tells the story. On this occasion the extra yard of pace from Rubery tipped the scales in our favour but the most pleasing outcome is that both teams have benefited from the “trilogy” of games so far.
The positives for Rubery: (i) excellent debuts by Zoe, Georgia and Sian who together with Emily, Laura and Nicki are six players who are eligible for u-14 next season as the older girls move up an age band (ii) we were missing key players in key positions and the girls adapted remarkably well (iii) more players are now threatening to score.

Thanks to
Gary, Graham and all from Bournville for another good game. Let’s hope we can play again in 2007.
James Busk for refereeing and Peter Wood for fetching the keys!

Saturday 18 November 2006  11.45am at Gorse Farm Park, Marston Green

Marston Green  4 – 1 Rubery     (Wood N)

This was an 11 a side friendly played over 2 x 30 minute periods. Jo was unable to play due to other commitments. Marston had requested the game to give their younger u-12 girls experience against older and physically stronger opponents whilst Rubery looked to get more experience against a good quality side.

First half

Rubery were playing against a strong wind and a slope and soon came under pressure, spending most of the first 10 minutes camped in or around their own box. Marston could not make their possession count as Rubery surprised them with timely tackles and clearances and generally kept their defensive discipline with Meryl at the heart of it. Emily and Coral were kept busy at full back. Sam was enjoying herself at centre back and got in several decisive tackles. Fortune smiled on Rubery when a cross shot hit the post and somehow stayed out and then was kept out in the frantic scramble that followed. Katie was ever alert and made a good save. It was great defending but the constant pressure eventually told and Marston took a deserved lead. Rubery then got more into the game. Emma, a late arrival, was now on the pitch and made her presence felt. Kirsty used her pace to get to balls first to relieve the pressure. Laura got in her customary tackles. Paige showed her usual quality when they she got on the ball. Nicky had a great run down the left flank and looked certain to score as she closed in on goal but shot just wide of the near post. Click found herself in a good position to score but the ball bobbled away to deny a clean strike. By half time Marston had enjoyed most of the play and were probably disappointed with the scoreline but Rubery were looking relatively comfortable at only 1-0 down and looking forward to playing the second half down the slope and with the wind. Half time Marston Green 1 -0  Rubery

The wind and slope gave the girls an immediate lift. Passes and clearances forward now became longer and more threatening. Too long sometimes as the ball ran on to the ‘keeper, frustrating Paige and Emma who were on the prowl for the through ball. Nicky started to get a lot of possession, either from passes out from Coral on the left or from Emily on the right. Click showed aggression on the left to win balls or close down. Alison was having her best game so far, generally making a nuisance of herself and trying to pass the ball on. Laura produced one of her specials, winning three tackles in the space of five seconds to keep up the momentum. At the same time the game was opening up for Marston who were now putting together good passing sequences. Despite their fine approach play Marston at this point still seemed to lack the final quality ball or strike, many of their attacks ending up harmlessly in Katie’s safe hands. Katie herself kicked out well to set attacks in motion. A breakaway goal always looked on the cards for Rubery so it was no real surprise when Paige finally found enough time and space to deliver one of her quality through balls. Nicky timed her run to perfection to beat the offside trap and slipped the ball neatly past the advancing goalkeeper. Up to this point Marston had enjoyed more possession but had not really produced many clear cut chances. Rubery now had the chance to make their physical advantage count. However it all went quickly wrong as Marston got back in front almost immediately. Rubery now committed more girls forward.  Coral delivered a couple of useful corners that produced goal scoring chances for Nicki and Click but they could not get enough power or direction into it. Rubery were leaving big gaps between defence and midfield and so were constantly vulnerable to a quick counter. Marston were quick to see it and attacked with some variety, down both flanks and through the middle. Emily found herself up against two players most of the time and Coral, now struggling with the effects of her illness, was beginning to tread water at left back. Rubery suddenly looked vulnerable but even so it was disappointing when the third goal went in, effectively killing the game at that point. Nevertheless Paige and Nicky now stepped up the pace and took turns to run at the Marston defence. Nicky got in a couple of useful crosses but the incoming players were too far behind the play. Paige was unlucky after dribbling in to the right hand edge of the six yard box but miscued her cross shot tamely and straight to the keeper. By now the gaps were getting bigger as our midfield girls left themselves stranded when the attacking moves broke down. The back four were up against it and eventually conceded a fourth. Marston were good enough to take advantage of Rubery’s naïve generosity.

Overview

The girls have again made progress. They withstood an onslaught fairly well in the first half and created chances to score that on another day could have surprised their opponents. The girls gave it away in the latter stages by abandoning basic disciplines in a brave attempt to get a second goal, but full credit to Marston whose extra quality and experience told in the end.

Thanks to: Tony, Janice and all at Marston for a good learning experience for our girls, and to Haydn for taking the flag.

Team:  Morris, Ball, Thomas, Singleton, Smith C, Smith K, Ferguson, Eaton, Wood N, Wood E, Rush, Steward.  Roll on / off applied and young Smith L was also a late sub.

11/11/06
Dosthills 3 – 1 Rubery ( C Smith)

This game was part of a cup competition on a league table format with Dosthills looking to secure their passage into the final. Rubery soon came under pressure as Dosthills peppered the Rubery goal area but Meryl and Emily (back in action after her toe operation) defended resolutely, keeping their discipline well. Nicky and Emma in midfield worked hard as usual. Click and Alison up front made a nuisance of themselves to prevent Dosthills getting their defenders into play. Coral and Jo came on for Meryl and Emma and also worked hard, Emma producing a brave header that caught the crowd’s eye. Coral kicked good balls forward and Jo made her presence felt in attack and defence. Nicky had a surging run forward on the right but could not get in a clean shot. Shortly afterwards a similar run on the left produced a cross shot from a wide angle.
Despite the pressure from Dosthills, Rubery were looking comfortable so it was disappointing to concede a goal from a relatively safe position, a failure to clear lines at the first opportunity being punished by Dosthills with a neat finish. Half time: Dosthills 1-0 Rubery

Rubery started the second half in good spirits expecting to put Dosthills under pressure with a strong wind slightly in their favour. However it was Dosthills who benefited from the elements when a fine shot on goal from distance that would normally have carried over the bar just held back and dropped under the bar, taking Katie by surprise. A great goal from Dosthills point of view but a little unfortunate for Rubery. Nevertheless Rubery were still playing well and got good balls forward. Meryl and Emma came back on, replacing Alison and Click and trying their luck up front. Meryl produced a great cross for Jo who had got forward quickly from midfield but was just denied by the advancing keeper who was alert to the danger. Nicky and Jo won a lot of ball in midfield and got forward in search of a breakthrough goal. That left spaces to counter which Dosthills constantly did skilfully with threatening attacks with 3 on 2 or 2 on 1 situations. Emily and Coral got great tackles in at the back and quickly set up counter attacks. When they failed Katie was there to tidy things up. Eventually Dosthills got through, this time Rubery failing to close down the advancing forward and allowing a clear shot on goal. Once again a lapse in discipline costing them dearly, but again a fine goal from Dosthills viewpoint. Rubery now showed their character and stepped up their game. From an ordinary looking position wide on the left Meryl threw the ball back to Coral who had come up to join the attack. Controlling the ball on her chest she invited a tackle before sidestepping the advancing defender and hitting a powerful left footed shot over the heads of several players and into the roof of the net, a contender for goal of the season. That stunned Dosthills and encouraged Rubery but it came too late to make a difference.

Overview
A good game with good goals, Dosthills ( who have now reached the final of this competition) having the extra bit of experience and quality to win it. A good performance by our girls with big plus points. Every player made a good contribution. Concentration and skill levels still improving, attacking the ball beginning to appear more frequently. Most significantly, the ability to get on top of a decent team for more than short spells.

Rubery Girls 6
(Fergusson 2, Wood N. 4)     Bournville Pumas (U12)   2

This was a 10 a side friendly played on the minor pitch over 2 x 30 minute periods. Emily was unable to play following a minor op on her toe and Sam had other commitments. Click played for Bournville to make up their 10 girl team. The last time the two teams met produced a 2-2 draw so Rubery, with Nicki back in action, were hoping for improvement on that.
First half
The Pumas soon showed good quality and put together passing sequences. At the same time Rubery showed that their extra strength and pace would not allow that quality to dominate play. The Pumas produced a number of promising attacks but their final strike was either too far from goal or lacked the power to trouble Katie who then put Bournville under pressure with good kicks out. Laura and Meryl held the fort at the back, allowing Coral to get forward on the left. Sensing their physical advantage Rubery started to relax and played some decent football. The midfield quartet of Emma Paige Nicki and Kirsty showed a good mix of skill and endeavour. Alison up front was again showing improvement and Jo was linking up well. Paige opened the scoring with a well placed shot after a brilliant through ball from Jo. Paige then scored another after a powerful solo run. Nicki got forward a few times and was a genuine goal scoring threat. Coral might have scored after a long run from left back but miscued with her left foot. However just as it seemed that more goals would follow Bournville latched on to a poor pass back to make it 2-1, a just reward for their own skill and endeavour. Half time Rubery 2-1 Bournville
Second half
Emma had come off just before half time after her sore throat led to breathing difficulties, allowing young Lindsay to play the rest of the game. Jo dropped back to right midfield and Kirsty played forward. The second half saw Rubery get well on top. Nicki scored four goals of quality, involving control, strength, balance, acceleration, composure, accuracy and power. Paige was unlucky not to get a hat trick but still showed enough quality to keep Bournville on the back foot and allowing Nicki the freedom to get forward. Jo had a good chance also but no luck in finishing. Alison got herself in good positions on the right and produced an excellent pass into the danger zone. Kirsty and Lindsay worked hard to stop Bournville countering. Meryl, Coral and Laura looked reasonably comfortable at the back but were tested regularly by the young Pumas who battled on bravely and produced excellent attacking play but just could not get enough power into the play against our physically stronger girls. They finally got through to make it 5-2 with a marvellous move and finish that was well appreciated by both sets of supporters. Rubery soon responded to it by getting the 6th and final goal.
Overview
The girls achieved the improvement they were looking for and got their first 11 a side win. We have to remember we were playing against younger girls but nevertheless a good performance overall.
Thanks to: Graham and all from Bournville for an entertaining game. Their young girls played really well and entertained Rubery’s supporters as well as their own. Click for volunteering to help out the Pumas.

Tuesday 19th September 2006  6.15 pm at Kings Norton Playing Fields

Bournville Pumas (1)     2    Rubery Girls  (0)   2

This was a friendly played over 2 x 25 minute periods to combat the fading light. Katie was unable to play due to other commitments so our guest goalie stood in. The scene was set for a fascinating contest. The Pumas were Bournville’s u-12 Premier league side that we expected to have good quality but were short on 11 a side experience. Would they overcome the physical advantage of height and strength that the older, improving, albeit inexperienced, Rubery girls enjoyed?

Rubery were a player short but started well, putting together a sequence of passes that put Bournville on the back foot. It was encouraging to see the girls getting the ball down and passing it around. Early signs were that Rubery would out muscle the younger girls but their pressure came to nothing as they were caught offside too often. Bournville then began to settle and put together good attacking play, switching the ball quickly from left to right and looking to put dangerous balls into the box. Rubery seemed to be coping reasonably well with it, the back four of Sam, Emma, Meryl and Coral finding themselves slightly quicker than the Pumas and able to recover lost positions either to clear or win balls or force errors. A lapse in concentration then allowed Bournville through after good build up play from them. A fine finish put the Pumas one up – good quality from them, disappointing for us. Rubery then put the Pumas under pressure, generally winning the physical battle in midfield as Laura started to get tackles in. Paige played a number of good balls forward and also found herself in a good position to score but sent the ball just a shade past the left hand post. Paige fed Jo for a clear run on goal but the central defender just got a foot in as Jo prepared to pull the trigger. Click had a threatening run down the left but shot wide of the near post. Emily attacked well down the right flank but Bournville defended it well. Coral put in a couple of good corners but Rubery failed to attack the ball. Bournville were having their fair share of the play, attacking and counter attacking well and from their viewpoint could feel aggrieved they had not scored more, just as Rubery did when they came in at half time. Half time score: Bournville 1-0 Rubery.

Rubery now put on 8yo Lindsay Smith to make up the full eleven. Surprisingly to the crowd, but not to the girls who have seen her play, she immediately made a difference, getting in tackles and playing balls forward. It seemed to raise the level of urgency in Rubery’s play. Laura was getting into their faces in her usual way and prodding balls towards a yellow shirt. Emma, battling on with a strapped up knee, had moved up into midfield and was able to press down the right flank, getting in crosses and a powerful but wayward shot. On the left, Click had another fine run and was unlucky with an attempted chip from the far edge of the 18 yard box that went just wide and over the bar. Jo was getting herself into good positions but again had no luck in finishing when her chances came. At the same time Bournville were threatening to score, moving forward in packs of three and linking up well, sometimes caught offside and sometimes the final ball going too close to the Rubery keeper who was alert to the danger and subsequently distributed well. Coral began to collect balls from the keeper and run with it deep into Bournville’s half, on one occasion beating three players before passing it well. Paige found herself with a run on goal but her attempt from far out went too straight rather than finding the corner she was looking for. It seemed like a matter of time before she got through but it was Coral who eventually levelled the score. She had come into the centre circle from her left back position and spotted the chance of a through ball past the advancing defenders. Jo saw the same thing and put her through. She ran the ball from the half way line into the penalty box and shot with her right foot. The keeper blocked it but Coral was alert to the rebound and placed it nicely with her left foot just wide of the keeper’s despairing arms. At the restart Rubery were shouting encouragement, saying let’s make it 2-1, and set out to do just that. However Bournville had their own ideas and it was still a close fought game that could go either way. Bournville produced excellent attacking play which against girls of their own age and size would probably have resulted in goals. Emily, Sam and Meryl kept their discipline to deny them a number of times and played balls out to set counter attacks in motion. The Pumas finally got through with a well placed shot just inside the far post from a wide angle after a fine piece of individual skill on the right. Rubery then responded well and mounted their own attacks. Coral put in two brilliant corners from the left to the far post that only required a touch but Rubery were just too shy to nod them in. Paige eventually found herself with a run on goal from just past the half way line, this time getting in nearer to goal before placing her shot inside the left hand post. A just reward for her persistence and hard work Rubery were now looking for the winner and as usual were finishing strongly. The keeper kicked long balls out to create opportunities to attack. The young Pumas defended well. There was still a need for Rubery to keep it tight at the back in the closing stages as Bournville still had their own ambitions – Meryl, Sam and Emily duly obliged. The final whistle came too soon for Rubery – but all in all a draw was a fair result.  Both teams could point to missed opportunities to win it but equally both could be pleased to avoid defeat.

Overview: A decent performance. The girls achieved two important milestones at 11 a side – they scored their first goal and avoided defeat for the first time. Another step forward had been made in terms of creating more chances but the girls still need more urgency in attacking the ball. On the defensive side, closing down and basic disciplines were improved but we still need more consistency if we are to keep the elusive clean sheet. Another plus point was coming from behind twice. A special mention has to go to young Lindsay who impressed the crowd and Bournville’s coach in particular with her range of skills and work rate.

Thanks to: Gary and all from Bournville for a fascinating contest. Their quality showed through and was at times a joy to watch but it was offset by the physical advantage enjoyed by our girls who worked hard to make that count and managed to put in a little bit of quality of their own. Bournville’s young referee who did a great job. Josh, Nathan and Nick, our u-16 lads, for coming along to support the girls.

Team:  Guest, Singleton, Thomas, Wood E, Smith C, Ball, Eaton, Ferguson, Steward, Price,  Smith L (2nd half only). No subs available.

Saturday 16 September 2006 at Glebe Farm, Stechford

The girls made their league debut, playing two games on the day as per the regular format. Rubery fielded a nine girl squad, roll on / roll off applying.

Kingshurst (2) 5 -0 Rubery

Having been beaten 9-1 earlier in season by Kingshurst u-12’s, this was never going to be easy for Rubery. Kingshurst pressed immediately but Rubery withstood the pressure well. An unfortunate misunderstanding at the back led to the first goal and a simple mistake led to the second. Otherwise Rubery defended in a disciplined manner. On the attacking side Click made positive runs down the left and Rubery won their fair share of throw ins but could not make them count. All in all a decent first half. Half time score: Kingshurst 2-0 Rubery

The second half was disappointing. Rubery were punished for lapses in concentration. The good news is that all three goals were easily avoidable by basic disciplines that were not followed but should be capable of being put right. Full time score: Kingshurst 5-0 Rubery

Rubery 0 -2 (2) Holy Souls Foxes

Rubery approached this game in a positive frame of mind, sensing a chance of victory but at least aiming for a clean sheet. It soon went wrong with some sloppy defensive marking, the Foxes taking their chance well. Despite some promising play from Rubery, there was a general failure to attack good balls played into the danger zone. A bad choice of pass (15 yards across the middle of the park to an opponent instead of a simple 5 yard pass back to the thrower) gifted the opportunity to Foxes to punish Rubery again. Jo came closest to scoring with a right footer. Half time score: Rubery 2-0 HS Foxes

Despite being 2-0 down the girls sensed they could get back into it. The second half saw some good end to end attacking football from both sides. Coral seemed to be everywhere in the thick of the action. Emily made threatening runs down the right. Meryl, Emma and Laura got tackles in. Click fired in a series of dangerous corners that begged for a strike on goal. Jo chased back to prevent a goal. Alison was warming to the task, seeing much more of the ball than she had in her debut during the week. There were some scary moments for both teams as Rubery pressed and Foxes countered. Katie pushed a powerful shot over the bar. The final whistle came too soon for Rubery.

Overview

The girls have again made further progress. The injuries sustained to Emma, Click and Laura hampered them – but that is something they have to get used to. The roll on / roll off policy did affect our balance and cost us goals but we will stick with it for long term benefit. Overall we got what we expected and wanted from this experience – harsh lessons. On the plus side the occasional defensive lapses do show that the girls are getting nearer to the point where conceding goals is optional – all that is required is the will to maintain discipline for the whole 15 or 30 minutes – 13 or 26 is not good enough.

Highlights

Katie – more good saves and kicking, and clever rolls out.

Emily – powerful runs down the right.

Coral – all action display, good headers and passing

Meryl – solid tackles and clearances

Emma – neat touches, brave play despite her injury

Alison – got more involved this time

Laura – harassed the opposition into errors

Click – positive runs, powerful corners

Jo – improved movement, great chase back to prevent goal

Rubery Girls   0  Bournville Girls “A”   4

This was a friendly played on the main pitch over 3 x 20 minute periods. Emily was unable to play due to school commitments and Nicki had not yet returned from her layoff. Two players made their debuts – Sam at right back and Alison up front. Laura was acting captain. With the prospect of likely defeat against a more experienced team, the main focus for Rubery was to build on their recent progress, to push the quality up another notch.

First session: Bournville soon put Rubery under pressure and brought out good defending and covering work from the back four of Sam, Emma, Meryl and Coral. Sam settled quickly into it with good tackles and a run forward. Two good headers out from Emma and Coral pleased the crowd. Katie (back in goal) came out to gather through balls. The midfield quartet of Kirsty, Laura, Paige and Click were busy also in chasing back.  Bournville’s first goal came from good work on the right leading to a threatening shot to the near post. Katie saved it well but some quick thinking from Bournville’s forward enabled her to steal the ball virtually out of Katie’s hands to steer the ball across the goalmouth for a simple tap in. The second came from a miscued goal kick that Bournville pounced on and finished well. Despite the constant pressure from Bournville, Rubery produced good work of their own. Click went on runs down the left flank, including a terrific 50 yard run from inside her own half into the box and firing in a low shot to the near post that the goalie smothered safely. Paige played intelligent balls forward, including one magnificent pass to Jo, who herself had previously produced a skilful lay off to Click from a long ball out of defence. Later on, Jo battled for possession on the edge of the box to set up a run on goal but the ball just would not fall kindly. Bournville continued to attack but were wayward or weak in their finishing, although credit must go to our girls for putting them under enough pressure for the forwards to take their eye off the ball. One powerful strike brought a fine save from Katie, pushing the ball over the bar to the relative safety of a corner.Score at end of first period: Rubery 0-2 Bournville

The general consensus on the first period was this was our best performance to date, the main objective of more quality was being achieved. The girls got back onto the pitch in good spirits expecting to produce more of the same. Sadly it all started to go wrong. The basic defensive disciplines of closing down and staying goalside went out of the window, allowing Bournville time and space to pass and move which they did with relish and skill. Click had to come off after being short of breath, Jo having to fill in for her. The 10 girl Rubery team were now under the cosh, Bournville creating numerous openings but failing to punish Rubery’s sloppy work. They scored two goals but could have had more, Katie being called upon to save the day time and again. Having said all that, the girls have to take credit again for plugging away in the face of adversity and with tired legs. With Click back on and the shape restored Rubery began to relieve the pressure. Paige again worked the ball forward after fine control. Jo made life difficult for defenders and forced errors. Coral worked hard to win balls and dribble forward down the left. However, the general pattern of the period was an onslaught by Bournville. By the end of the session it was a relief for the girls to go in only 4-0 down. Score at end of second period: Rubery 0-4 Bournville

After such a disappointing 2nd period, the girls were now looking to recover their reputation as a team that never gives up and finishes strongly. The final session saw Bournville again piling on the pressure but Rubery were now coping better with it. Katie was busy between the sticks and was in excellent form. Meryl and Emma reverted to basic disciplines and were more effective for it. Meryl marshalled the defence, bringing them out more quickly and she herself attacked the ball and pumped it back in Bournville’s direction. Sam and Coral at full back were giving the Bournville forwards less time and space to work in. Kirsty and Laura raised their game to get tackles in on the edge of the box and run forward with the ball. This was more like it! On the attacking side, Alison, who understandably was finding it hard on her debut, got her first real touch. Paige again showed her quality with a menacing dribble forward and excellent support play. Coral sent a number of long passes forward to Click wide on the left and Click in turn tried hard to get balls forward to Jo who was running tirelessly. It was almost impossible to see in the end as the light faded but it had been a much brighter display from Rubery. To bounce back and keep a clean sheet for the last 20 minutes, at the same time producing moments of quality, was a fine achievement.

Overview: Well beaten by a much better team, as we expected, but with a reasonable scoreline. For Rubery, it was “a tale of three halves”. Good quality and defending in the first period, a drop in standards in the second, a good recovery in the third. The most pleasing aspect of the whole game was that the main objective had been achieved – the quality had moved another step forward.

Thanks to: Paul and all from Bournville for the opportunity to push our girls a little further forward. Our u-16 lads Nathan, Josh and Dave for sharing linesman duties (a pint each was promised, naturally it can only be water!) and to James Busk for refereeing.

Holy Souls Foxes 2  Rubery Girls  0

This was a Mini Soccer format over 3 x 20 minute periods but 8 a side to give play time to as many girls as possible. Rubery had a squad of 8 and Foxes 9.  Laura Eaton had her bruised arm bandaged before kick off, as a precaution, having had an altercation with her horse.

First session

It was clear from the start that this was going to be a fairly even contest, with both teams soon getting forward with serious intent but with defences coming out on top. There was plenty to cheer from both teams, Rubery’s highlights as follows. Katie, enjoying the freedom of playing out, hit a lovely pass across field to Click to turn defence into attack and was getting her feet in to win important balls. Emily continued her good form from the Stratford game, making good runs down the right flank. Coral, in central defence in Meryl’s absence, cleared a number of balls and got tackles in. Emma got forward from left back and fired in a powerful shot from 25 yards out that skimmed the crossbar. Within a minute she fired in another from the same distance, low and on target. Click shaped up well for a powerful cross volley shot but just could not get the right purchase on it. Up front Jo took up intelligent positions and looked to lay off short balls into the path of support players coming through from midfield. Laura stuck to her task, providing nuisance value in the limiting circumstances of her injured arm. Our guest goalie looked solid between the posts but could do nothing about the Foxes goal, a simple finish from close range, the ball having been played to their striker from a misplaced pass by Rubery. Rubery responded well and almost equalised right at the end of the first period, Katie’s instinctive flick just flashing past the right hand post. Score at end of first period: Holy Souls 1-0 Rubery

Rubery, with the advantage of a slight slope and a reasonably strong wind on their backs, now looked to put the Foxes under sustained pressure, but it was still end to end and evenly fought. Coral moved to left back and Emma to central defence but in practice found themselves playing midfield, leaving two Foxes strikers with clear runs on goal. As in the first period there was much to admire from Rubery. Emma produced amazing turns of pace to get back and win the ball, on a couple of occasions with cheeky but skilful backheels before passing the ball forward to safety. Coral and Emily were collecting balls from good passes out from the keeper and progressing the ball down either flank. Katie made sure the opposition knew she was on the pitch with timely tackles and the occasional good touch and short accurate pass. Laura kept going as she normally does. Click put in some dangerous throws and produced another volley, this time on target from wide on the left that the keeper safely gathered. Jo worked tirelessly up front to create openings for herself or others but the ball ran unkindly for her, being restricted to just a half chance that she struck well with her right foot whilst off balance but could not quite wrap enough of her foot around the ball to prevent it spinning out for a goal kick. Score at end of second period: Holy Souls 1-0 Rubery

The third session followed a similar pattern with both teams busy at each end. Rubery were hell bent on getting an equaliser, risking all again by leaving the Foxes strikers unmarked with clear runs on goal. Amazingly Emma got back almost every time to deny them, or failing that our goalie came quickly off the line to frustrate them. Some clever kicking out from goal into space to feed the runs of Jo set up counter attacks for Rubery, who were looking to take advantage of the extra girls in midfield. Emily seemed to be in constant action up and down the right flank, dribbling forward and chasing back. Once again Laura was warming up as the game progressed, getting her feet in and playing short balls forward. Rubery were winning numerous throws and corners and building up the pressure. Katie got herself into a good position, only to slip on a now very slippery surface as she struck the ball towards goal. Click was taking the corners on the right and fired in a great one that saw the ball ping pong from player to player in the penalty box but it just would not fall kindly for Rubery. The girls on both sides were now tiring a little, particularly Emily who had worked extremely hard and was struggling to shake off a heavy knock sustained in this last period. The Foxes were getting their share as well but to their credit they also just got up and got on with it. The lack of substitutes was now for the first time in the match a big factor. Despite another valiant effort from Emma even she could not get back quickly enough to retrieve a 10 yard start from 20 yards out. The Foxes finally got through and went 2-0 up with a well placed shot just inside the post. A final big push from Rubery followed in an attempt to get back in the game but the Foxes continued to defend and counter well, threatening to make it 3-0 with a powerful shot that brought a point blank save from our goalie. The highlight of the period for Rubery was a skilful run from Emma from deep inside her own half, sidestepping two defenders and looking like she was going to go all the way until unselfishly she tried to deliver a short pass to a team mate in a better position. The ball just did not run kindly, and that was just about the story of the day for Rubery. Score at full time: Holy Souls 2-0 Rubery

Overview: Another hard working and spirited effort. The girls were disappointed to lose and very disappointed not to score.  That in itself shows the progress made in the 7 months or so since their first game. The two goals conceded were easily avoidable by basic marking so that is of little concern. The failure to score would normally be a concern for a more established side but not this one. That will be put right naturally from more play experience. More attacking moves, more chances created, more skill displayed are big positives the girls can take from this game.

Thanks to: Mike and all from Holy Souls for a really good game – we look forward to many more over months and years ahead.

Saturday 26 August 2006  10.30 am  at Stratford Rec off Swans Nest Lane

Stratford Town Girls 4 -0 Rubery Girls

Both teams were short of players due to holidays but decided to keep the fixture, Stratford’s team of 9 girls playing against Rubery’s 8 on a full size pitch. The plan was to play 3 x 20 minute sessions but the humidity and pitch size took their toll and this was cut back to 3 x 15 minute periods. Laura Eaton was unwell before kick off but bravely played on.

First session: Rubery kicked off and unusually for them started quite brightly, with Click and Joe looking to get on the end of forward passes from Coral. Stratford countered with their better passing and then started to get on top, dominating this first period. Rubery’s three girl defence of Emily, Meryl and Kirsty were having to work hard. The offside trap occasionally caught out Stratford to relieve the pressure. Laura did what she could to get in the way of attacks building from Stratford’s midfield. Our mystery guest goalie (who wishes to remain anonymous) did well, coming quickly off the line to claim through balls, handling and kicking well.  However, Stratford’s pressure eventually told with a cool finish after fine build up play. The session ended prematurely to give all the girls a chance to re-hydrate. Score at end of first period: Stratford 1-0 Rubery

Second session: Stratford piled on the pressure from the outset and maintained it for most of the session. Emily started to make runs down the right in an attempt to feed more balls up to Jo who was desperately trying to get hold of the ball, but with two players marking her at all times it was proving difficult. Click put in two good defensive headers on the left side of midfield. Coral and Meryl broke up numerous attacks with well timed interventions. Laura helped the ball forward whenever she could from her static position (as instructed) in the centre circle. Kirsty was generally making a nuisance of herself as we have come to expect, getting her feet in and harassing Stratford into errors. A fine save from the goalie kept it at 1-0 but eventually Stratford got through with another fine finish that the goalie could do nothing about.

Score at end of second period: Stratford 2-0 Rubery

Third session: Rubery now put in a big effort and started to produce their best work. Coral played a defence splitting ball to Emily who was continually overlapping on the right, as well as getting back to defend. Emily carried the ball deep into Stratford’s half and played an inch perfect pass into Jo’s path on the edge of the area with a run on goal at her mercy, only to be caught marginally offside. Kirsty then played a nice ball forward on the left to Click who controlled it and quickly delivered a quality ball into Jo’s left foot at the near post but Stratford’s central defender just got her foot in to knock the ball out for a corner.

Coral’s subsequent corner passed over many heads and landed right in the middle of the goal, bouncing on to Jo who had peeled away back to the 6 yard line and hit a right footed volley that went agonisingly just wide of the righ
