Holy Souls Foxes / Rubery U10    0      Bournville Warriors U10    4

This was a re-match friendly, with ten of our girls on this occasion making up all of the 10 girl squad. As in March it was played at 8 a side on the larger mini soccer pitch over 4 x 15 minute periods. Francesca Toney made her debut. Nici Walker (Holy Souls) took the team on the day, with Steve Homer supporting.
The game was fairly even throughout with some good passing football being played by both teams. There was much to admire from start to finish with all of our girls making a positive contribution. The key difference between the teams was more powerful and clinical finishing by Bournville, in particular from one of their bigger girls.
Team highlights included:
Determined defending in numbers, with players getting back to goalside quickly and winning many tackles
Winning a good share of second ball
Putting together good sequences of accurate passes, from defence through midfield and into the path of forward players.
One such sequence saw 5 short passes within the centre circle that drew in defenders and set up an attack
Improved movement off the ball
By comparison with the previous friendly, more chances created
Individual highlights included: Ellis Baker
Another solid and fine all round display. Used her pace and energy well to retrieve positions and played well weighted and accurate passes out from the back.
Abbie Bartholomew
Good positioning and brave goalkeeping to keep out powerful shots. In the outfield also showed good awareness and made positive runs forward.
Ellie Bartholomew
Worked hard to carve out openings to score. Showed again her good touch and balance in open play and with runs on goal. Unlucky with finishing.
Lauren Chipman
Another good performance in goal, good alertness, handling and distribution. In the outfield showed deceptive skill and pace to wrong foot or by pass defenders and create chances to strike on goal.
Madison Chipman
Worked tirelessly as usual. Made good interceptions and tackles. Showed good control and got accurate passes forward.
Abbie Greaves
Showed good presence and anticipation in midfield and supported the play well. Always alert to danger, closed down quickly to win back balls and generally helped to win the midfield battle.
Jess Homer
Brave tackling against much bigger opposition. Composed and alert throughout and kept her positional discipline well. Solid clearances. Won “girl of the week” for a good all round display.
Rosie Simpson
Showed good pace, skill and composure on the ball to pick out the correct short or long pass. Good support play up and down the pitch.
Lindsay Smith
Good use of left foot with accurate passes from the back or midfield. Good first touch into space in tight areas.
Francesca Toney
Covered a lot of ground to get tackles in and win second balls and generally let the opposition know she was on the pitch. Showed glimpses of skill that suggests there is more to come. A very promising debut.
Overview
Another pleasing effort from all the girls who just seem to get better and better with every game.

It is only a matter of time before the girls start scoring goals. Just a little bit of luck and a little bit more composure in the final third of the pitch will go a long way towards it but it is the ongoing improvement in individual skill and teamwork that will ultimately deliver it.
Team: Baker, Bartholomew A., Bartholomew E, Chipman L., Chipman M., Greaves, Homer, Simpson, Smith, Toney
Thanks again to: Sarah and all at Bournville for the game –no doubt we will play many times in the years ahead!
Special mention to: Kathy Lomas who made her debut as a referee and did very well indeed. Well done Kathy!

Saturday 31 March 2007.....6-a-side games at Kingshurst

Nine of our girls, including new girl Abbie Greaves, joined forces with two from Holy Souls Foxes to make up two teams of 6, goalie Abbie Bartholomew playing in both friendly games against Kingshurst. The two Foxes / Rubery teams then played each other, so giving all the girls the full 60 minutes. The main objective set for the girls was to attack and defend as a unit, avoiding large gaps between defence, midfield and forward.
First game: Kingshurst (0) 1 -0 (0) Foxes / Rubery
A strong wind enabled our girls to put Kingshurst under considerable pressure in the first half. They got bodies into the box, including defenders, and had several attempts on goal. Kingshurst countered well but were thwarted by some determined chasing back. The girls were unlucky not to be in front by half time.
The second half now saw Foxes under pressure from the wind but they still passed and moved, still working hard as a unit. Our girls enjoyed plenty of possession in the Kingshurst penalty area but a mixture of good defending and swirling wind kept them out. In their search for a goal the Foxes left themselves more and more open to a counter. That led to the solitary goal of the game as Kingshurst used their pace to run on goal from a long way out and finished well. The girls were unlucky to lose what was a closely fought contest.
Team: Abbie B, Ellie, Jess, Lindsay, plus two Foxes
Second game: Kingshurst 3 -1 Foxes / Rubery
The first half was very much like the first game with Foxes moving the ball well, putting Kingshurst under a lot of pressure but vulnerable to the counter. Kingshurst went 1-0 up with a well taken breakaway goal. The Foxes then got back into it from a good strike from outside the box from Lauren. Half time: 1-1. The second half saw the Foxes pressing forward in search of more goals and leaving themselves open at the back. Kingshurst took advantage with good balls out from the back but missed a number of chances, albeit some being speculative shots from distance or acute angles. Throughout it all, the girls worked hard to get back to deny goal scoring opportunities. It was end to end stuff with our girls passing their way forward, getting into the box frequently and getting shots in, some wide, some on target. Kingshurst eventually made their skilful counters tell with two clinical finishes. Team AbbieB., Abbie G, Ellis, Madison, Lauren, Rosie

Third game
Rubery 2 – 0 Holy Souls / Rubery / Kingshurst

This game was played to give the girls valuable experience. It was good experience also for our u14 girl Coral Smith who was encouraged by Kingshurst’s coach Alison to referee a match for the first time. Two Kingshurst girls kindly volunteered to make up the sixth player or stand in for a Foxes player who had to leave at half time. One of them played in goal to give Abbie B a chance to play out. Lauren went in goal for Rubery, a team made up of entirely Rubery girls. This now being at least the second game for each girl they were obviously getting used to the size of the pitch and the conditions. They naturally relaxed a little more in familiar company. The girls on both sides tried to play good football and carved out plenty of chances. Rosie scored twice with well taken goals, becoming the first u10 girl to score twice in one game.
Individual performances
This week let us invite the girls to accept our plaudits for their excellent teamwork rather than our praise for their individual performances. However it would be wrong not to mention:
- Abbie Greaves who made a solid debut, showing good composure and awareness and lots of potential
- Abbie Bartholomew who won “Girl of the Week”, playing well in goal and making good saves in the two games v Kingshurst and then playing well also in the outfield.
Overview
It was a most enjoyable day, for which we thank Alison and her colleagues at Kingshurst. They kindly put on some post match sandwiches for our girls in the clubhouse – some clinical finishing followed! The most pleasing aspects were how well the girls took on board the idea of working up and down the pitch as a unit and getting bodies into the box at both ends of the pitch. The main objective was therefore generally achieved – the basic idea was grasped but obviously not yet perfected. Gradual fine tuning will follow over many years ahead. Another good feature was how the girls tried to get the ball down and pass it in difficult windy conditions. Another plus was that some players experienced different positions for the first time and adapted very well. Tiredness did come into play late in the games and as a consequence defensive discipline broke down a little – another one of those things relatively easy to put right. This was 6 a side on a 7 a side pitch and it told on the legs in the end. Once again the girls have improved on their previous performances – long may that continue!

Saturday 24 March 2007 at Glebe Farm 11.30am and 12.15pm

The girls played two matches with mixed results and good performances

Glebe Farm A     0 – 0     Holy Souls Foxes

The Foxes secured their first point of the season with a hard working and disciplined display from all the girls. The girls had their chances to win it but had no luck in finishing.

Dosthills      8 – 0     Holy Souls Foxes

With positional changes made the Foxes lost their shape and discipline against physically stronger girls but still managed to play the better football. Chances again to score but no luck in finishing.

Highlights for our girls on loan:

Ellis Baker
Read situations well to intercept passes and make timely clearances and passes of her own. Used her pace well to get to balls first. Cruelly elbowed in the stomach against Glebe but showed physical and mental toughness to carry on without complaint.

Ellie Bartholomew
Attacked the ball well. Positive runs down either flank. Got in 4 strikes and unlucky not to score. Good defensive header (unusual at this age!).

Lauren Chipman
Did exceptionally well in goal to keep a clean sheet. Showed good anticipation and awareness, safe handling and kicking. Later went back in goal for the sake of the team when Jess was injured. Showed good touches in her brief spell in the outfield.

Madison Chipman
Always alert. Closed down quickly and got in brave tackles. Good ball control and passing. Good, solid and confident all round performance that won her “Girl of the Week”.

Jess Homer
Defended resolutely with strong tackles. Got across the pitch quickly to close down threatening attacks. Always looked up to pick out a pass. Went in goal again and got injured – never afraid to get hurt for the sake of the team

Paige Rosin
Worked hard as usual. Always put defenders under pressure and always offered an outlet to her team mates on the ball. Was unlucky with runs towards goal as a strong wind took the ball too far beyond her.

Lindsay Smith
Good covering work in defence. Showed good composure on the ball, including clever chest control. Played some nicely weighted passes.

Did not play: Steward.....Ineligible to play: Bartholomew A. ,Greaves, Simpson

Overview
The girls were very pleased with their 0-0 result. Keeping a clean sheet is a massive achievement for them. On the balance of play they deserved to win it.
The 0-8 scoreline looks like a hammering but it wasn’t. The girls played some good football and created chances to score. There is not much they can do at this stage of their development against girls who are physically more powerful. They are already learning from it and gradually with more experience and coaching they will learn how to deal with it.
Overall, and once again, another pleasing performance from all the girls who continue to get better every week.

Saturday 17 March 2007 at Glebe Farm 10.30am

Dosthills u10 (1) 4  – 2 (2) Holy Souls Foxes u10

This was a cup match 15 mins each way with seven of our girls on loan to Holy Souls and so again making up the majority of the 9 girl squad. Lauren was unable to play and Rosie and the two Abbie’s were ineligible to play.

Having lost 7-3 and 6-0 in previous encounters the Foxes were looking to guage their progress. Dosthills were a player short and immediately that made a difference. They were unable to dominate as much as they had previously done. Jess was soon busy in goal, having to smother balls that were in danger of running loose to incoming forwards. Lindsay covered well at the back when the need arose. Ellis and Madison broke up threatening attacks as did Ellie when tracking back. Becky, returning from a long lay off, got her feet in too. Paige was playing well and patiently up front. Gradually the girls weathered the initial Dosthills attacks and began to set up promising moves of their own. Paige got hold of the ball on the half way line and fed a nicely weighted pass into Ellie who quickly got herself balanced and struck a powerful shot from distance. It sailed past the ‘keeper to put the Foxes 1-0 up. A rare luxury for the girls and it was certainly enjoyed by the goal scorer who appeared to be grinning from ear to ear for the next 3 minutes. The girls soon had more to smile about as Lindsay got forward from the back and sent the ball forward, again from distance. It took a deflection and wrong footed the goalie to make it 2-0. The dubious goals committee, comprising Nici Walker and Natalie Homer, later awarded the goal to Lindsay. It was all going well until Dosthills exerted their extra muscle, changing tactics so as to play everything through their “big” player. Jess was having to be alert to shots and through balls and coped with everything thrown at her. However, the extra strength told and Dosthills pulled one back before half time. Score at half time  Dosthills 1  - 2  Foxes

From the restart it was clear that Dosthills were going to carry on feeding their one strong player with instructions to hammer the ball goalward from all angles and distances. Sadly for the Foxes it was a tactic that worked and one that Lindsay at the back or Jess in goal could do little about as powerful shots rained in. Nevertheless the girls played some good football. Ellis cleared the ball well from defensive positions. Becky beavered away in midfield. Madison controlled the ball well before playing accurate passes forward. Paige always looked to put in Ellie who herself showed good skill on the ball. Final score:  Dosthills 4 -2 Foxes

Our girls in the Foxes squad: Baker, Bartholomew E, Chipman M., Homer, Rosin, Smith, Steward

Did not play: Bartholomew A. Chipman L., ,Greaves, Simpson

Overview

The girls were disappointed to lose their 2-0 lead but there were some good things to take from this game. We got closer to Dosthills compared to the 6-0 scoreline when we last met them. Skill levels continue to improve. Most pleasing was less crowding round the ball and better awareness and use of space

We are still experimenting with positions which inevitably leads to worse results in the short term. We will continue to focus on performance and improvement rather than results, which will yield rewards in the long term.

Overall, another pleasing performance from the girls

Saturday 10 March 2007 at Baytree Farm 10.30am

Holy Souls Foxes (U10)      0      Bournville Warriors (U10)     5

This was a friendly, with nine of our girls on loan to Holy Souls and so making up the majority of the 11 girl squad. It was played on the larger mini soccer pitch over 4 x 15 minute periods. Both teams used the opportunity to field new or relatively inexperienced players, the adopted 8 a side format purposely helping in that regard. Foxes coach Nici Walker aimed also to rotate the goalkeeper to give the girls much needed experience between the sticks.

The Foxes lost the toss but found themselves kicking off slightly downhill with the wind on their backs. Foxes soon enjoyed good spells of possession in Bournville’s half. Our forwards looked to get on the end of some decent passes forward from defence or midfield but were being outnumbered and well marshalled. Our midfield girls kept themselves busy in breaking up attacks but still got forward with menace to keep Bournville on their toes.
At the same time Bournville often broke quickly but were thwarted by good tackles or interceptions, followed by thoughtful passes forward to players in space. Rosie Simpson, making her debut, made a confident start in goal, reading situations well to claim through balls and then distribute cleanly.
Score at end of first period Foxes 0 - 0 Warriors

The second period saw the Foxes come under severe pressure, the wind and the slope coming into play, as well as strong passes forward. The girls defended resolutely, on some occasions 4 or 5 them piling in for the same ball (not recommended – and they will grow out of it!). Their commitment and enthusiasm was clear to see. The pattern of play was much as the first period and it looked like another blank as the game went into added time. Sadly for the Foxes a speculative and fairly harmless looking shot from a long way out took a cruel deflection and wrong footed the ‘keeper to make it 1-0 to Bournville. From the restart the girls lost possession and were stunned by a swift counter attack and good finish from Bournville to make it 2-0. Two goals in a minute in added time was cruel. The first was simply bad luck but the second is something the girls will learn to avoid in future – giving away easy possession and then caught napping from a restart.

Score at end of second period Foxes 0 – 2 Warriors

The girls now showed their mettle, responding to the late goals with a stirring display. Bournville seemed to up their own tempo, no doubt buoyed up by their two goal burst. Foxes matched them stride for stride and got feet or bodies in the way to get the ball clear. Debutant Abbie Bartholomew looked the part in goal on her turn to go in, handling and kicking well and with confidence. Our forward play now looked more threatening. More passing sequences started to come into play as the game seemed to open up. However, as in the first two periods the defending on both sides was good and clear chances were hard to create.
Taking stock at that point, the girls had gone 45 minutes and conceded only two goals, one an unfortunate deflection. Taking into account their relative inexperience a great performance.

Score at end of third period Foxes 0 – 2 Warriors

The game opened up a little more now as girls on both sides tired. That suited Lauren who seemed to be getting stronger and was unlucky with the run of the ball on several occasions as she dribbled towards goal. Ellie got in a shot from distance but the angle was too sharp to trouble the ‘keeper and the wind held it back. All the girls tried desperately hard to build attacks to get themselves back in the game. Numerous corners and throw-ins in dangerous areas were conceded by Bournville as our girls got forward. Sadly they could not make the pressure count.
At the same time the Warriors had their own ambition to add to their tally. They passed the ball well and also used the natural elements well to put our girls under pressure. Eventually the pressure told. Three more goals went in, albeit one a very unlucky own goal, the second of the game.

Final score: Foxes 0 – 5 Warriors

Our girls in the Foxes squad: Baker, Bartholomew A., Bartholomew E,, Chipman L., Chipman M., Homer, Rosin, Simpson, Smith

Individual highlights for our girls

Ellis Baker
Another all action and courageous display we have come to expect from Ellis. Great running and tackling throughout the game in a crowded midfield as well as in defensive areas. Brave when injured. Little nudges of the ball forward to team mates to put the opposition under immediate pressure. Little nudges but big important passes.

Abbie Bartholomew
Impressive debut. Showed athleticism, enthusiasm and good “presence”. Her ballet skills served her well in – quick feet and good balance. Did well in goal with calm assurance.

Ellie Bartholomew
Showed good control and change of pace to get past defenders. Made clever runs forward to invite passes from midfield. Got in a good shot. Chased back to defend well when needed to.

Lauren Chipman
Awarded “girl of the week” for a fine overall display, both in and out of goal. Ran and dribbled well with the ball. Closed down quickly. Good passing, movement and awareness.

Madison Chipman
Showed courage when injured. Battled from start to finish in a difficult crowded midfield to make life difficult for Bournville’s bigger girls and together with Ellis was in the thick of the action. Brave goal keeping and good kick out.

Jess Homer
Solid defensive performance with brave tackles and skill under pressure, including a now trademark drag back that wrong footed the Warriors to set up a counter attack. Showed good discipline and awareness to hold her position. Good clearances and kicks out from goal.

Paige Rosin
Carried the ball well from deep positions to put the Warriors on the back foot. Always looking to link up with other players and get clever passes away. Worked tirelessly to break down the Bournville defence and got back to get tackles in.

Rosie Simpson
Immediately showed character to go in goal and proceeded to do it very well. In the outfield, a very promising debut, showing confidence and good judgment with competent defending and passes forward.

Lindsay Smith
Good reading of the game and interceptions at the back. Brought balls out calmly under pressure. Good dribbling and passing. Used two feet well.

Did not play: Becky Steward, Abbie Greaves

Overview
Yet another spirited and improved performance.
Lots to admire individually and collectively as noted above.
Longest time the girls have gone without conceding a goal (30 minutes)
Good understanding between players is starting to come through.
Players showing improved touch and composure on the ball.
New girls Abbie and Rosie made fine debuts and have strengthened the squad, making 11 in all
Lots of technical mistakes made during the game but these are of no concern – easily put right or avoided by coaching and more experience over a period of time.
Overall, an impressive display. The big plus point is that the girls are making good progress towards being able to compete on level terms with good players and teams, at the same time having massive scope for improvement.

Thanks to: Sarah and all at Bournville for the game – let’s play again soon!

MINI SOCCER LEAGUE 7 A SIDE
Saturday 27 January 2007 at Glebe Farm

GLEBE FARM B (3) 3-0 (0) HOLY SOUL FOXES

SUTTON A (3) 9-0 (0) HOLY SOUL FOXES

Our girls on loan to the Foxes worked hard as usual against the top two teams who were much physically stronger and more experienced.

Highlights for our girls:
Ellis Baker
Was her usual busy self in midfield, always near the action, covering ground quickly to get stuck in and win balls and then pass them on quickly to team mates. Showed great character by coming back on after getting a ball smacked hard into her face.
Ellie Bartholomew
Impressive debut, showing a good range of skills, including left footed volleyed clearance, right foot flick over a defender’s head and a great shot against Sutton. Awarded “Girl of the week” medal.
Lauren Chipman
Put defenders under pressure, took up great positions and was a genuine goal threat. Ran well with the ball and unlucky with strikes on goal
Madison Chipman
Got in well timed tackles to break up attacks and set counters in motion. Played a superb crossfield pass across the halfway line to open up the play.
Jess Homer
Did really well in goal to keep a clean sheet in the second half against Glebe. In the outfield showed good skills, including a great volleyed clearance and a blockbuster tackle against Sutton.
Lindsay Smith
In defence against Glebe, good closing down and interceptions against quick players. In midfield against Sutton, showed composure on the ball and played good forward passes into space for forwards to chase.
Did not play
Paige Rosin, Becky Steward, Jess Kendall
Overview
The girls continue to improve, not afraid to try out new skills they have worked on at home or training or simply picked up by playing in this Mini Soccer league. A feature of both games (and many previous games) was that the girls put some strong pressure on the opposition in the latter stages of the game. They showed tremendous character against top of the table Sutton, having been on the wrong end of a goal feast, coming back strongly in the last 5 minutes and coming close to scoring. The next challenge for the girls is therefore an obvious one - simply to start a game the same way they finish it!

Saturday 11 November 2006 at Glebe Farm
GLEBE FARM B     4    HOLY SOUL FOXES    0
GLEBE FARM A     2    HOLY SOUL FOXES    0

Our girls on loan to the Foxes battled well and were unlucky not to score against “A”. An excellent performance in the second half against Glebe “A” was rewarded with a clean sheet for the half – a massive achievement for such an inexperienced team at this stage in their development. Warmly appreciated by enthusiastic parents on the sidelines.

Highlights for our girls:
Ellis Baker
Covered a lot of ground to support both attack and defence, got in strong tackles.
Jess Homer
Skilful drag back under pressure, solid tackles and clearances out of defence.
Becky Steward
Just kept on going, finally producing a good turn after several attempts and typifying the character and spirit the girls have.
Lindsay Smith
Timely tackles and good long kicks and passes out from the back.
Paige Rosin
Ran and ran and almost scored with a good strike on goal.
Jess Kendall was unwell and so did not play

This mini soccer experience is doing the girls a lot of good. They are improving week on week, showing more skill, aggression, awareness and alertness.

MINI SOCCER LEAGUE 7 A SIDE

Saturday 16 September 2006 at Glebe Farm, Stechford

Our four girls, who are on loan to Holy Souls Foxes for this season only, made their league debuts. Two of the Foxes squad were available this week, making a 6 girl squad in all, one “man” short.

Dosthill (2) 7- 3 (2) HS Foxes

Based on early pressure from Dosthill it seemed like an avalanche of goals would follow. However, Foxes surprised the crowd with a series of brave tackles and neat short passes. Eleanor, taking her turn in goal was doing a fine job, either gathering safely or calmly watching balls roll out for goal kicks. Grace then brought the Foxes supporters to life when she scored a well taken and well deserved goal to put Foxes 1-0 up. Dosthill soon drew level after skilful play. Jess Homer then brought another thunderous cheer from the Foxes supporters (including Rubery and Foxes  u-14 girls) with a cool finish, having played a key part also in the build up with Becky and Grace. Dosthill soon countered again to level. Jess Kendall at the back was warming to her task, trying hard to block the path to goal. Lindsay relieved the pressure with long goal kicks out and exchanged clever passes with Grace.  As the girls came in for a well earned drink at half time, the feeling on the touchline was – what an amazing performance against all the odds.  Half time score: Dosthills 2-2 HS Foxes

The second half saw Dosthill pile on the pressure, using their greater experience and physical strength to full advantage. Jess Kendall in goal could not do much about most of the goals that inevitably followed as the outfield players tired. The girls battled bravely and at times skilfully, always looking to play positive football. Jess in goal produced a fine kick out. Lindsay continued to kick long balls out. Eleanor defended intelligently and bravely, including a brave block with her chest off a powerful strike. Grace worked non-stop to probe for openings and break up attacks. She took a quick free kick that caught Dosthill napping but had no luck with the strike. Becky tried hard with tired legs, looking to pass balls forward to Grace or get back to help. Jess Homer was in constant motion up and down the pitch, generally making life difficult for Dosthill and supporting attacks. Later in the half Lindsay pushed forward and latching onto a loose ball in the box calmly struck home a third goal for the Foxes – a just reward for all six girls who had worked so hard and played so well. Full time score; Dosthills 7-3 HS Foxes

Overview

A great game to watch, enjoyed by the whole crowd. Heroic performances from all of the girls who each proudly received the “girl of the week “ medal. We had seen little hints of quality to come in key areas - control, movement, passing, dribbling, shooting, tackling, intelligence. Definite potential to get better with every game. A terrific spirit and willingness from all the girls to work as a team, quite remarkable at this very early stage.
